Dear Colleagues and Friends: Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE),
As per the procedure for appointing new Heads of Department (HoDs): a departmental call for nominations occurred on 24 May 2017; the duly constituted selection panel met on 8
June 2017; recommendation(s) were made to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic on the same evening; a decision was also and promptly received on the morning of 9 June 2017 – Human Resources (HR) processes commenced thereafter and successfully concluded. In
order to allow for continuity over the recent accreditation process, Mr Samuel Loyiso Gqibani’s final/second term as HoD was extended by a month – until end of Oct. 2017.
Through this email, we’re expressing our gratitude to Samuel Gqibani, outgoing Head of Department: Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Technology (MIET), Doornfontein Campus
(DFC). Mr Gqibani is favourably known to us in various capacities – most significantly, for his leadership in the successful accreditation of all academic programmes by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA); this process has been completed on
25 Oct. 2017. He has taken, also by way of recruitment, an approach towards developing the department’s postgraduate and research capacity. As the summer examination commitments for this semester concludes, Loyiso will start the work on his doctorate thesis,
which he intends to conclude during his sabbatical period ending Jun. 2018 (starting Jan. 2018).
Regarding the HoD decision and way forward:
Dr Madindwa Mashinini obtained a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in 2015. Started as a Lecturer at UJ in 2015 – on the basis of progressing
research outputs, he was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2016. Madindwa is recognised for his involvement through the faculty as a member of the Faculty Research Committee (FRC) and Ethics Committee. He is the driver of the multidisciplinary Makerspace with
our DFC Library for innovative 3D printing, materials optimisation and processing. Amongst others, he is a registered member of ECSA and South African Institution of Mechanical Engineering (SAIMechE).
Through Dr Madindwa Mashinini, we’re looking forward to our continuation of excellence through teaching, learning, research and innovation in the Department of Mechanical
and Industrial Engineering Technology, the broader School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (SOMIE), Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE).
We congratulate Dr Mashinini & also wish him the best!
