Dear Colleagues,

With over half a decade of service and two terms as Head of Department: Town and Regional Planning (Doornfontein Campus), Mr George Onatu’s HoD term comes to an end; we are writing to thank Mr George Onatu for his leadership.

Together with the Department, George’s leadership achievements include, among others, accreditation of our programme(s) through the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN), leadership to South African Planning Institute (SAPI) and nationally impacting projects such as his contribution to the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act (SPLUMA), No. 16 of 2013.

Mr Onatu took on a sabbatical to allow him to focus on his doctorate and we’re anticipating success in this direction. During the sabbatical period, Mr Zenzile Mbinza stepped in – we thank him for his leadership over the period of May - Sept. 2016. Mr Mbinza’s short period as HoD includes a student recruitment drive for the new programme in urban and regional planning. We also thank Mr Mbinza for his role allowing for this leadership transition.

The transition is enabled through Dr Trynos Gumbo:

In June 2016 (this is, by design, a delayed announcement): as per the Senate-approved institutional HoD appointments procedure / policy, the nominations and selection panel processes yielded a recommendation in favour of Dr Trynos Gumbo, which was subsequently supported by DVC:Academic, Prof Angina Parekh (June 2016).

We’re pleased to welcome HoD Dr Trynos Gumbo, Town and Regional Planning, as of 1 Oct. 2016 (regular appointment term of three years).

Dr Gumbo has formerly provided leadership to the Sustainable Development Programme, Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) in the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). Shortly after joining UJ, he co-worked with his colleagues, towards the new master’s degree (first for the department): Sustainable Urban Planning and Development (SUPD). We look towards his approach enabling, among others, a Pan-African approach to Urban and Regional Planning.

Through Dr Gumbo, we’re looking forward to a renewed approach of excellence through teaching, learning, research and innovation in the Department of Town and Regional Planning, the broader School of Civil Engineering and the Built Environment (SOCEBE), Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE).

Our message is furthermore and routinely communicated as follows:

(1) Broader Department: through Prof Stephen Ekolu, Head: SOCEBE;

(2) Broader Faculty: through the Faculty Board, Sept. 2016; through associated standing committees of the Faculty;

(3) Broader community and family of the University of Johannesburg (UJ): Through the Senate meeting, Mar. 2017 and through the UJ Division: Advancement (Strategic Communications).

Sincerely,

Saurabh
