help, help!

we have in our posession a 3rd party disk which seems to have
lost its label and partition table. we think it's completely dead but
would like to try reformatting it before we write it off. however,
there is nothing in the format.dat on this system that even remotely looks
like a valid entry for this disk. when we pop the cover off to the shoebox,
all we see is a s/n sticker, and a sticker that says 'made in usa
97560' before the disk died totally format seemed to think it was a HP(?!)
drive but given the disk was purchased in germany we don't know if that's
hewlett-packard or the initials of the german company he got it from. the
disk is supposedly a 1.6GB unformatted capacity.

i think that all seagate drives start with ST-something, so could this
be a micropolis?

this is a bit of an emergency as the disk needs to be reloaded with
software if at all possible before friday night.

thanks in advance!
