introduces two new desktop servers:
o SPARCserver 5 - The Value Leader for the Enterprise Networked Desktop
o SPARCserver 20 - The Networked Desktop Performance Leader
Together, they give outstanding performance in all critical application
areas. Designed for distributed computing from the beginning, the
SPARCserver 5 and SPARCserver 20 run Solaris(R), the premier UNIX(R)
operating environment.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS

The SPARCserver 5 comes bundled with a Solaris 2.3 unlimited-user
server license, which covers use of the required Solaris 2.3 Edition II
or Solaris 2.3, Hardware: 5/94 operating environment. Order the
appropriate Solaris 2.3 Edition II Media Kit. The SPARCserver 5 is also
supported by Solaris 1.1.1 Version B - the license (and media kit) is
optional and must
be ordered separately from the system.
The SPARCserver 20 comes bundled with the Solaris 2.3 unlimited-user
server license. Order the appropriate Solaris 2.3 Media Kit.
Uniprocessor configurations are supported by Solaris 1.1.1 Version B -
the license (and media kit) is optional and must be ordered separately
from the system.
For AUI Ethernet, optional X981A adapter cable must be ordered.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
---------------------
Q. When should a customer order a SPARCserver Model 51 versus Model 50?
A. The SPARCserver 20 Model 51 with its 1-MB SuperCache should be
recommended for most server applications such as database or
compute-intensive tasks. For even better performance in those
situations the Model 61 provides faster CPU performance and the
system board runs at the full 25 MHz/50 MHz clock speed. The Model
50 is best suited as an entry-level server or for NFS(R)
environments (except those moving large files).
Q. Why is the price difference between the SPARCserver 20 Model 61 to Model
612 greater than the price difference between the SPARCstation Model 61 to
Model 612?
A. The SPARCserver 20 Model 61 (at US$16,495) offers excellent database
performance value, and scales exceptionally well to the Model 612.
SPARCserver 20 Models 61 and Model 612 (at US$26,995) are competitively
priced to sell successfully. The SPARCserver 20 Model 612 carries
additional costs for the SunSoft server license for 2-CPU
configurations, and an additional 1.05 GB of disk storage.
SPARCstation 20 Model 612 carries an aggressive discount for the
second SuperSPARC Module to encourage multiprocessing on the desktop,
and no additional fees for a 2-CPU configuration or additional storage
disks.
Q. Will there be a Model 614 on the SPARCserver 20?
A. Not likely. Engineering studies show that the SPARCserver 20 package
cannot dissipate the heat generated by the current 4-way 60-MHz
SuperSPARC module design.
Q. Why isn't there a Model 512 on the SPARCserver 20?
A. We expect customers interested in multiprocessing performance will
purchase the Model 612 instead. If they really want the Model 512,
they can purchase an additional 50-MHz SPARCmodule and upgrade their
Solaris license to the dual-processor Workgroup Server license.
Q. Is the decision to support only four SPARCstorage Arrays on the
SPARCserver 20 technical or marketing driven?

it strongly against its competitors. Theoretically two SPARCstorage
Arrays can be supported on each SBus (for a maximum of eight arrays),
but this configuration is not yet tested and therefore is not
supported.
Q. Why can the SPARCserver 20 support four SPARCstorage Array systems, when
the SPARCserver 10 can only support two?
A. Technically, they could each support eight SPARCstorage Arrays (2 per SBus
slot). Limited testing resources prevented us from testing these
maximum configurations initially, so we concentrated on supporting
more on the SPARCserver 20. That way, new systems being sold could
reach greater capacities with the arrays, while the installed base
of SPARCserver 10 systems could still take advantage of the new storage
solution.
Q. Why isn't the SPARCstorage Array supported on the SPARCserver 5?
A. Due to limited resources, the SPARCstorage Array is not tested for
support on the SPARCserver 5. The storage requirements for the
target markets of the SPARCserver 5 can be met with existing disk solutions
(like the multi-disk packs) and typically don't require the capacity
of the SPARCstorage Array.
Q. Is the SPARCclassic server and SPARCserver 10 memory compatible with the
SPARCserver 5 and the SPARCserver 20?
A. No, each of these systems has unique SIMM designs that are optimized
for the different system architectures for maximum performance and
capacity. The SPARCserver 5 uses new industry standard Jedec memory
SIMMs which are incompatible with the SPARCclassic SIMMs. The
SPARCserver 20 uses faster memory SIMMs (60 ns) than the SPARCserver 10
(80 ns), although they are backwards-compatible.
Q. Does the memory need to added in pairs for the SPARCserver 5 and
SPARCserver 20, like the SPARCclassic server?
A. No. In the SPARCserver 5, memory is available in 8 MB and 32 MB SIMMS and
can be added individually and you can mix different densities. There
are 8 SIMM slots allowing for a maximum of 256 MB of memory. In the
SPARCserver 20, memory is available in 16 MB, 32 MB and 64 MB SIMMs and
can be added individually and you can mix different densities. There
are 8 SIMM slots allowing for a maximum of 512 MB of memory.
Q. Is the 64-bit SBus supported on the SPARCserver 20?
A. No. The hardware is capable of supporting 64-bit operation, but at this
time the software drivers in Solaris are limited to 32 bits.
Q. Is any upgrade needed if I want to run my SPARCserver 5 on Solaris 1.x
instead of Solaris 2.3, Hardware: 5/94?
A. The SPARCserver 5 includes only a Solaris 2.x license. If you wish to
run 1.x, you will need Solaris 1.1.1 Version B system license and Media.
Order SC-P (US), SC-E1-P (Europe), SC-46-P (Japan), SC-47-P (China),
SC-44-P (Taiwan), or SC-45-P (Korea).
Q. Will I need a license upgrade for my existing servers to allow support of
the new SPARCserver 5 machines?
A. If the "existing server" mentioned above is a 2.x server, no license
upgrade is required. If the server is a 1.x server, then you will need
the Single-Server 2.x Upgrade License (SOLS-LF).
