I thought I'd tell you about Audrey this week, you haven't met Aud have
you?
She's a dizzy suicide blonde, dies by her own hand, who pops up when we
go camping. Well not just then but as she lives in Indian Country,
Lancashire, we seldom visit. ;-)
She's a pensioner, well that is she draws her pension every week. She
doesn't like people to know, in fact she's going to have it paid into
the bank so no one sees her in the Post Office on pension days. It used
to be mayhem, she would go with a group of us, usually her hubby was
used as cover and the book produced on the counter under cupped hands.
The same thing happened when we went for Fish and Chips to our local,
Lymington, chippie. She wouldn't ask for pensioners portions, she got
Grannie Annie to go in for her. Annjean was always game to save a few
bob on the discounts we get from various places.
20% off her camping fees and another 25% for being disabled, then the
search for marked down items at the supermarket. James was ten before he
discovered that you could buy goods at the full price. Grannie Annie had
him looking for marked down labels.
The government helps too. You get a T/V licence for nothing if you are
over 75 and an extra 25 pence pension for being over 80. With Maggies
tenner and the £13.50 a year that the 25p makes these pensioners could
be riding round in Daimlers. ;-)
But we won't ask, well I do but I was trained well and if I forget
there's an angel tapping my shoulder saying ask if there's anything off
for pensioners. Yes Jean I do it all the time.
The minimum income guarantee is there for the asking it can be £18 a
week if you have less than £98.15 coming in each week and you don't
count housing or council tax benefit either they are your entitlement
too.
When I'm asked at the checkouts if there's anything else I always quip.
" A fiver from the till ?" you never know it might work ;-)
I'll let you into a secret, I always hesitate if I'm buying booze, the
operator might ask if I'm old enough and I haven't got a card to prove
I'm over 18, have you ?
How embarrassing if they asked. ;-(
