Birthdays Hmmmn ! Who'd have them ? Well I would because it marks the
time for changes in our lifestyle.
Here in the forest we have a glut of babies, the four legged ones make a
wonderful sight, Their mothers apparently letting them wander anywhere
but really they are keeping a close eye on them. They need protecting
from so many things and humans are the most feared.
Mac is Ok ! He has four legs and a tail so he might just be a small foal
as he bushellbritches his way about. He stays clear of mums though
because those hooves are lethal.
The Ponies are all owned by someone, some have reflective collars to
make them visible at night on the roads. Many are very clearly branded
with a logo peculiar to their owner.
Here on the campsite they roam through, at least twice a day, and we
constantly have to say leave them alone to the unwary.
Children are often taken close by mums or dads and 'brave' dads pat the
seemingly docile animals.
They get kicked frequently, bitten occasionally and mugged for titbits
all the time.
Stop feeding them and they will get persistent and eventually very angry
that you are not feeding them. They can smell a food store in a tent or
awning at fifty paces. They will tear at zips and canvas to gain entry.
Each year there are sales, at the auction pens on Beaulieu Road they are
sold sometimes for less than £20. Good specimens fetch about a hundred
and exceptional ones two hundred.
Many end their days as dogmeat or as human meat in neighbouring
countries.
If you like the look of the ponies take a picture, try not to want your
children, hubby or wife in the shot getting 'near' !
Please treat the animals with respect, for everyones safety please do
not touch or feed them.
Lovely to look at, lethal if upset.
Oh I got on my high horse again ;-(
Mac says it's time to venture forth, he has an appointment with a herd
of Roe deer on the common.
Back for breakfast of Rusks and Marmite washed down with copious mugs of
Douwe Egberts Continental Gold.
