Hey Ho it's ..... .... .... Sunday;
We have been blessed with lots of warm and dry weather this week but I
noticed the clouds were too thick for us to see the alignment of the
planets. If you look to the West about an hour after sunset there should
be a line of five planets a little to the right of Orion, I suppose if
you look down you will see a sixth planet our own.
It's not going to happen again for a hundred years and few of us will
see this effect again. Probably Elizabeth will be telling her great
grandchildren to take a peep. I can hear her voice trembly as she says "
My Grandad told me where to look." Or perhaps she will have forgotten
by then ;-)
We have until the end of May I understand to see this phenomenon, then
it's the big wait.
The world this week has seen rioting in the streets of our EU colleagues
the French. Why, you may ask, were they so angry ?
It was democracy they were rioting about and they showed very little
Liberte, Egalite et Fraternite as the result of an open vote was
declared.
They couldn't be bothered to vote for candidates who were entrenched in
the current government so the far right candidate was chosen. Not even
irrevocably so because they are left with a deciding vote to choose
their President.
The hated 'facist' candidate stands very little chance of being elected
and yet gangs roamed the streets of cities incited to action.
Are they right in their anger ? Are they facing a repeat of the 1933
German election which brought about the holocaust ? I think not but it
shows the strength of feeling about a man who dismissed the massacre of
innocents as a detail of history.
Did you think I could go a whole week without a mention of this lovely
place, I see the blossom dropped as if it were snowing, a covering of
the ground under the Hawthorns as the pollinating has already occurred.
My friend Norman, he of the thatched cottage fame, tells me that the
bees are very active already this year and that some have already
swarmed. Joyce has honey from last years crop for sale it makes an
interesting change to jam on my cream teas.
The Clotted cream pack recommends spreading the cream on a scone and
topping with Golden syrup, they call it Thunder and Lightening. I prefer
the Honey on first and topped with a dollop of cream. I call it the
promised land, that's because it flows with milk and honey. Mac says I'm
mean because I don't share with him, I don't care cos he never offers me
any of his stuff.
Anyway which way should the cream be put on the scones. Under or over
the jam ? A thing to ponder on this week, experiments will be carried
out by the team here at Roundhill and as St Georges day has just passed
I shall call my method the English Connection. Smear the cream to make
four quarters of white on a field of plum jam ! Cry God for Harry,
England and St George, then eat it slowly with a cup of PG Tips.
In return for a chat and a cuppa I take Joyce my spare plastic bags, a
couple of bagfuls from Tesco and Safeway. She needs them for customers
who will be calling for fresh vegetables and flowers.
I daren't tell her but I have a favourite item, it's the plum jam I
sneakily buy an extra two or three jars of over the season I have it on
fresh crusty bread for a Yorkshire treat in those dark days of winter.
Have you noticed in families that there is always one member of the clan
who is quiet and reserved. James is a bit like that, he doesn't push
himself forward and although he knows lots of things he tends to get
overlooked as an intellectual giant. He's 11 this year, he goes to the
high school next and I can see under the quiet demeanour he'll be going
on to great things.
I'm going to Almondbury he told me, I asked if would be my old grammar
school at the bottom of St Helens Gate.
No he said, I'm going to the secondary on Fenay Lane. I had so wanted
him to go to that ancient 1609 chantry school, but he says he'll feel
better going with his mates to the other. Good luck to him for pals are
precious things.
My pal is nudging my arm. It's time to go.
Cumberland sausage and black pudding for breakfast, Douwe Egberts to
wash it down.
Illustrated sauce @ http://www.outlane.com/page210.htm or
http://www.age-net.org.uk a site for silversurfing.
See You next week.
