The Department of Economics invites you to attend the Haavelmo lecture 2017. The lecture will be given by Olivier Blanchard in honour of Trygve Haavelmo, Nobel laureate in Economics.
Olivier Blanchard is Professor emeritus at MIT, former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund and president-elect of the American Economic Association.
In the lecture, Blanchard asks: "Should we reject the natural rate of unemployment hypothesis?"
This hypothesis, as developed by Milton Friedman and Edmund Phelps, involves two key policy propositions:
-the natural rate of unemployment is independent of monetary policy
-there is no long-run trade-off between unemployment and inflation
Blanchard reviews the arguments and the micro and macro evidence against each proposition.
Time: 2.15-3.30 p.m., 4 December. Note that coffee and fruit will be served outside the auditorium from 2 p.m.
Place: Auditorium 1, Eilert Sundt building, Moltke Moes vei 31, Blindern
