When Catalina initially came out I installed it and spent about two weeks in Hell trying to get it to work. It played havoc with not just 32 bit apps, but with what iTunes turned into among other things.

My question is: for those who have upgraded to the current version of Catalina how does it work for you? AND for those who are running Parallels Desktop to emulate Mojave how do UI apps work? Are they sluggish? Stable?

I feel like I need to eventually upgrade to Catalina (and beyond!) but I’ll wait if it’s going to cause me more grief in general and specifically when using MetaSynth, ArtMatic and other UI apps.

Cheers!

Hi Glen,

I have a Catalina boot disk but to be honest I’m not running anything in it except the beta test versions of Voyager and AMD. A large amount of my music software won’t run natively under Catalina and I simply can’t afford to upgrade it all. It’s thousands of dollars - maybe ten thousand or more when you factor in things like interfaces that Catalina makes outdated. So I’m hoping I can just maintain Mojave until I’m too old and decrepit to use computers.

I’m sure you know, but the latest release versions of Voyager and AMD already run natively under Catalina, and I believe Eric is working on Metasynth.

Thanks, Peter. Well, that’s not good news for you. I just have a few apps that are 32 bit. I'm also concerned that Apple is talking about building their own chips, which means yet another architecture change maybe?

I'm curious to know if anyone has tried Parallels Desktop to run Mojave and UI apps.

The only trouble with your plan is that I doubt you will ever be too old and decrepit to use computers. Some people just keep improving with age.

Cheers!

Glen

Yes, I heard they’re going over to ARM. That’s a whole new ballgame. But as I understand it, Catalina and 64bit will make that relatively easy as these things go.

Yes, you’re probably right about getting too old, but I seriously don’t know how I can afford to play the constant catch up anymore.

Is ArtMatic Designer CTX actually released? I saw it was available to
buy but thought this might be pre-pay because I haven't seen anyone
here talking about working with it.

Yes indeed. The CTX versions of both AMD and Voyager are released.

That's good to hear. What's the skinny on the CTX versions? Has anyone
done any walk-though videos to show it off? I'd be interested to see
what it's like to work with.

I've been using the CTX versions for about six months as we test. There are some things that take a bit of getting used to, and Eric has changed some of the operability (not always to my liking) but all in all it's an overall gain in speed, quality and stability I think. ArtMatic now works in full RGB 16bit colour space which is wonderful, and Voyager has some stunning new capabilities: multiple light sources (including suns and directional beams), better camera controls, the ability to move lights, terrains, objects, sprites and clouds directly in the workspace (relative to camera view), a bespoke sprite function, incredible and fast volumetric cloud rendering, new atmospheric modelling, and a host of other things. If you like using ArtMatic to create Voyager systems, the functionality between the two apps has been improved out of sight, and they work fluidly together. And of course both are native 64bit now.

If you do Facebook, I highly recommend joining the Worlds of ArtMatic group where you'll get to see examples of what's being done, and also find links to files and tutes. I know some people don't like the Facebook environment, but it is a really great way to host conversations which are largely image based. It would be quite impossible to do it on this Google Groups system, for example - it's just far too unwieldy and clunky (it pretty much feels like an old AOL message board these days).

Thanks, Peter. I'm not on Facebook, unfortunately, as I would love to
take a look.

I bought Voyager last time around, but it wasn't ever something I saw
myself using. This time I'd get ArtMatic, and it would be interesting
to know (beyond running on Catalina, as I am still on 10.14 and have
no plans to move) what to look forward to in CTX.
