I hope you're all having a great summer. I just wanted share some new information about a couple of our upcoming events.
For those of you who have not heard, The UI Habitat for Humanity Chapter recently became a participating member of a new and larger branch of Habitat International called Youth United. The focus of Youth United is to have an affiliate-driven chapter, which is supported by youth in the community who will actually fund and build a house for Habitat. Participants aged 5-25 will serve as the leaders, planners, fund-raisers, public relations specialist while those who are in the ages of 16-25 actually work on the construction of the house. In our community, the Iowa Valley affiliate Youth United Chapter is composed of members from: UI Campus Chapter, High School 1440/ Interact Clubs, Rotoract, and the Partner Families for whom we are building houses.
We are in the process of forming a leadership board for this new organization; the positions we currently are trying to fill are Co-Chair and Secretary. What are the responsibilities of these positions? The Co-Chair would work with the Chair, Mary Yagla from Rotoract, in making sure our group is headed in the right direction, as well as delegate jobs to the individual groups in our Youth United Chapter. The Treasurer will primarily take meeting notes and manage the mailing list. We're planning on having the leadership board meet on a monthly basis. If you are interested in pursuing one of these positions, please let me know.
State Farm Insurance has given our Youth United Chapter the opportunity to receive $10,000. In order to ensure we win this matching grant, we must raise our own 10 grand by February 1, 2008. All of the groups in our Youth United Chapter have put together a busy schedule of events for this fall semester. The following is what we have to look forward to:
Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Youth Build: Monday, July 30th at 5:00 PM. The address for the construction site is 828 St Annes Dr. in Iowa City.
Youth Build Construction: There will be build days every Friday and Saturday starting as soon as the foundation is set. You can register and sign up to volunteer at Iowa Valley's online calendar: http://www.ivhfh.org/volunteer/index.php
Frisbee Golf Tournament: September 23
Home Coming Parade: September 28
National Habitat Campus Chapter Meeting: September 28 - 30 in Atlanta, Georgia. Let me know if you are interested in going and I can send you more information!

That's all of the news I have for now. Again if you are interested in either the Youth United leadership positions or representing the UI Chapter in Atlanta this September let me know.
Hope to see you at the Groundbreaking Ceremony on the 30th,
Chad
