Hi everyone,

Hope you are all enjoying our day off!

I have a brief update on our first film and would like to start
discussion about the film series.
I look forward to hearing all ideas/suggestions....

As we discussed, we would like to screen our first film in early/mid-
January.

I looked into A Closer Walk, a PBS documentary about HIV/AIDS that
Helena suggested.
http://www.acloserwalk.org/

I checked the UIUC library catalog and it doesn't look like any of the
libraries here have it, so I stopped in at the MSB library and spoke
with Ryan, one of our librarians. He found the film at 4 other
Illinois colleges and is looking into acquiring the film thru
InterLibrary Loan.

If we all agree, this film might be a great option for our first film.
Thoughts??
(I thought more about Sicko and realized that it is more about
problems w/ the US health
care system....what do you think?)

More films....
Ryan (the librarian) is also researching another film I would really
love to get, but I think it will be much harder to acquire: it is a
2006 documentary about the merits of the Cuban health care system

Also, I have thought about the following two films, both of which I
have seen, for future film screenings....I can most likely have them
sent to me if we decide we like them!

1. Jung in the Land of Mujahideen - a film about the Italian non-
profit group, Emergency, that builds first-world hospitals in war-torn
areas. This film features a hospital in Afghanistan.

2. Living with SLIM - a short film about children in African nations
and how they have been affected by HIV/AIDS.

These all look like great ideas! Based on its availability and
content, my vote would be for A Closer Walk as the first movie.

I did some searches to see about overview films on International
Health, and the closest fit seems to be another one shown fairly
recently on PBS, "Rx for Survival -- A Global Health Challenge"...But,
this is a 6 part documentary that runs 336 minutes--probably a bit
much.

One idea I'd like to throw out is a short (~8 min.) film about a
recent book by the Center for Global Development called "Millions
Saved: Proven Successes in Global Health", available at:

http://www.cgdev.org/section/initiatives/_active/millionssaved/overview/video/

...maybe we could play this before/after the movie as an introduction
to the global context into which the AIDS pandemic fits?

Hey Sara,

Great proactivity!  Here is a link to that film: http://www.acloserwalk.org/.  I saw most of it - and as I recall it was very well-done.  I have also seen Rx for Survival.  It's definitely geared to the lay-man..it's not over the top intellectually.  It is a 6 part series, but they are each individually separate - so if you show one, it's not going to affect the others, etc.  They are each an hour-long.  I'm for whatever.  I tried searching and I too found Salud.  It's harder than I thought to locate some good films.  I mean I know a lot of HIV films, but not so many generalized global health films.

...About Rx for Survival, I had high hopes, but found it borderline
boring. I didn't watch all of it, but the parts I did see didn't
impress me much.
