Hello,

In a continuation of getting together to talk about health care
reform, I'm organizing a lunch-time discussion:

> when = this Thursday 10.29 from 12-1 pm
> where = Med Sciences Building, room 354B

This time, I am attaching some literature and links that can
facilitate and ground our conversation. Additionally, we will be
joined by Dr. Hester who will challenge us (if I may borrow her words)
"to think about the deeper political and ethical issues at work in a
market-based system while acknowledging the intense institutional and
economic pressures medical practitioners must negotiate on a daily
basis in addition to all of the ethical ones they (we) must make in
their (our) face-to-face interactions with patients." I'm excited and
think this will lead to an excellent discussion that will leave us
with thoughts to turn over in our head, talk to friends about, and
sleep on.

The literature and links:
> insurance issues faced by 19-29 year olds: http://healthreform.gov/reports/youngadults/index.html
> looking at ED visits in post health insurance reformed Massachusetts: http://www.rwjf.org/publichealth/product.jsp?id=48929
> addressing care for 10% of patients that account for 70% of expenditures: NEJM, (2009) 361: 1521-23. (attached)
> health reform benefits for IL: http://www.healthreform.gov/reports/statehealthreform/illinois.html
> a free market fix to health care: http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=10646, http://healthcare.cato.org/free-market-approach-health-care-reform
> looking at affordable health care: http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/08/affordability.html
> health disparities: http://www.healthreform.gov/reports/healthdisparities/index.html

I could keep adding to the list, but this should be more than enough
for now.

Looking forward to a lively discussion, ;)
Francisco
