Hello all,
Ashley and myself have been working with other student organizations,
including UPPSA (the urban planning and policy student group). They
are collaborating with Engineers without Borders for a long term water
purification project in Guatemala. The group will be meeting on
January 23rd, from 4-5:30, location TBA to plan for the upcoming trip
in May. If you are interested in attending, email Ashley or Kate, and
we can forward emails to you individually about the project. Both
Ashley and I plan to attend this first meeting. Might be a good way to
get out in the field!

Here is a little more information:

> If you are receiving this email it is because you have expressed an
> interest in contributing to the Guatemala water purification project. The
> purpose of this email is to get people who have expressed an interest in
> this project to form a Guatemala Advisory Committee. This committee will
> be interdisciplinary, and will work to develop a plan that can be
> implemented by the group that goes to Guatemala in May. Currently, the
> areas of expertise represented are: 1) engineers, 2) planners, 3) LEED
> architect, 3) geographer (GIS), 4) public health.
>
> As way of background, EWB (Engineers Without Boarders) student
> organization is the lead on this project - they are the group that is
> organizing, designing, and installing the system. They have already gone
> to Guatemala several times, are going again in January, and will be going
> in May to finally install and complete the project. UPPSA (Urban Planning
> & Policy Student Association) has agreed to coordinate with EWB to
> facilitate the long-term sustainability of the project.
>
A very loose agenda for the
> meeting is: 1) EWB introduces their project, 2) everyone introduces
> themselves and their area of expertise, 3) begin to brainstorm what EWB
> can do to ensure the long-term sustainability of the water purification
> system, 4) set-up the next meeting.
