About STEER, courtesy of Regina:
The South Texas Environmental Education and Research (STEER) program
is a
course in environmental medicine and border health. As a part of the
program I got first hand exposure of some of the most relevant issues
affecting public health in the borderlands. In addition to learning
about
the history of the colonias along the border, where many residents
still
live without basic water and sanitation services, the course focuses
on
environmental aspects, such as protecting the Rio Grande Watershed and
sociocultural aspects, like learning about some of the common
practices
used in natural medicine in south Texas. More information can also be
found at the website of the program
