Hey all!

Just checking in to see who has their books and when we can start discussing. I think waiting til Sept. 1 might be best as I know some folks haven't even gotten the book or joined the group. The next email will only go to people who have signed up up on the google group so no worries if you do not want to participate.

Do let me know!

I'll start the discussion by identifying some themes and asking questions and we can go from there.

Good reading to you!

Moya

Hello Loves-

As you may or may not know a film called Precious based on Sapphire's book Push is coming to a theater near you (in the winter). I'm really interested in reading the book, discussing it and then seeing the film together. Skin color, size, sexuality, physical/sexual abuse, incest, racism, self-esteem are some of the hard topics that are broached in the text.

The familial nature of the violence made me think that this discussion should be intergenerational. A close friend and survivor asked that the circle of folks participating be small, intimate and mindful of the reality that informs the fiction in the Novel. With this in mind, please ask your parents, children, siblings, and friends to join in this conversation. I believe thinking about this book collectively could be a really healing process.

Will you push through the hard places with me?

I must admit that I am worried that the systems analysis will drop out in the film version. I'm a little afraid that what we will see on screen will be a dark skinned fat black mother who abuses her fat dark skinned child and it takes skinny light skinned girls to save her. But you never know; sometimes Hollywood will surprise you.

So can we say that we'll have the book read by August 17, so we can discuss, process, do some healing work before the film release?

Please email me if you have any questions and feel free to forward to those you fee would be interested.
