Dear UHD SGA,
Below is an update in regards to the metered lots (read emails starting with Mr Newports).
I might be speaking this Tuesday at public session depending on what they tell me. This does not mean that if they do not support me, that I will not talk (they might tell me to hold off a week). I need SGA to be prepared for anything at anytime. If you want to be a leader, now is the chance. I need a hand full of you to come with me to public session. If you do not want to speak in front of the Mayor and Council Members, that is fine, I just need your support and come with me. To those that come, I will advice multiple lobbying strategies, verbal and nonverbal on that day.
Thank you,
Ivan A Sanchez
UHD Senator

The issue has not justified by any of Mr Newport's arguments. Here is why:
First of all, please inform Mr. Newport that he cannot compare a jail and a court to a school. Makes no sense to me. Last time I check, we serve very different purposes. Hence, extending their lots does not justify extending ours.
Secondly, I find it very convineant for him to say that we can park anywhere around the extended meters. While that might hold true, other "free" parking is VERY limited comparing it to the huge extended metered lots that are SO CLOSE to our school. It's amusing to see Mr Newport trying to make an argument by saying to park somewhere farther. However, not so amusing when a student parks as Mr Newport states, and then gets mugged on the way to or back from school. I am sure the UHD police will reinforce me with such documentation as we ARE being attacked.
Though funds are being allocated to fix our parking by 2013, Mr Newport's argument does not hold sufficient purpose to extend the parking lots around my school. I simply CANNOT accept the lack of consideration for our safety. The students at UHD, SPECIALLY our woman, CANNOT wait for safety until 2013.
Also, from my understanding, this city used to charge
24/7 at any giving meter. However, night club lobbyist won the fight hence changing the time. State Representative Carol Alvarado (Former Houston City Council Member) helped out back in her day. Now, 2012, we ask you to help out a school.
I am asking Mr. Ed Gonzalez to please not give up on this issue. I remind you, the students of UHD only want to concentrate on their education. This issue is not only a matter of morals and ethics, it's about academic success.
I am prepared to take this to city hall with or without support, please advice.

Subject: Parking at UH-D
Jerry,
Parking Management conducted an assessment of the management practices of all surface parking lots it administers in the Summer of 2011. As you know, Parking Management is responsible for managing on-street curbside parking spaces, but also manages surface parking lots near UH-Downtown, Municipal Courts, Chartres on the East Side, near the Jail facility, and a few other locations. Each of these lots have meter times that are distinct from the hours and rates charged at on-street meters (for example, parkers pay a flat rate of $5 at the MuniCourts lot).
Individuals that do not desire to pay to park in lots 1, 2, or 3 still have the option of parking in any of the on-street spaces after 6:00 pm. Parking Management also regularly budgets funds to improve paving, lighting, and drainage on its lots. Parking Management has included planned funds in its FY13 budget proposal to upgrade lots 1, 2, and 3.
Thank you,
Christopher Newport
