Minutes of the UH Island Council Meeting
August 4, 2010
UH Island in Second Life
Present: Professor Lilliehook (Barbara MacLain, Island Administrator),
Professor Szwarz (Rebecca Meeder, COE), DrDriving Clarity (Leon James,
Psychology), Sifan Shan (Steph Mohr, IFA), Arcanejill Magic (Sean
Robinson, aquaculturist), Elle Mexicola (Yoko Yamamoto, Aquaculture
Hub and LIS), and Adra Letov (Diane Nahl, LIS/ICS) convener.
1. IFA Event: SiFan debriefed us on the fascinating live IFA mixed
reality event last month with a Maui audience of 60-70 people and a
dozen avatars on UH Island seated at the Amphitheater, we could
simultaneously hear the speaker on video, see his avatar, view his
awesome slides, and see and hear the Maui audience. In September Sifan
will give a workshop on UH Island to teach us how to produce mixed
reality events for our departments and programs. There are many
technical details to deal with and much testing is needed for a
successful event. SiFan is arranging a live feed of a camera that
looks at the Faulks observatory.
2. Archiving events: The group discussed the value of video capture of
these academic events to share with the UH System and others.
3. Presentation area: SiFan has set-up the amphitheater so anyone in
the UH System Group may use the viewers for classes, presentations and
performances. UH System group members may also rez their own viewers
to place on the stage. Speaker animations and a podium are provided.

4. Prim limits: Barbara would like us to make an effort to find and
return or delete unused prims and alert students to taking their prims
after using. There is a new sandbox area on a small island off the
beach where anyone can build and Auto Return is on.
5. Recruitment and the UH SL video project: Arcanejill volunteered to
interview UH Island users and make a video of our work and uses of the
Island. This would go on the web site and any of us could post it on
FB and other sites, as well as send the link to interest other UH
System folks to use the Island. Send your RL photos to Jill of you,
your building and campus, your teaching, inworld conference pics, etc.
and contact Jill inworld to set up an interview.
6. Ice Cream Social and Astronomy tours Aug 6: Jill set up an
immersive tour that takes one on a rocket to the space station and
through it’s interior and ends back at the Observatory. Chat describes
the scene at various points. Jill set us the dance area and the ice
cream and soft drink machines with other interesting SL devices. SiFan
will give a short talk at the Pan STARRS console then avatars will
move to the tour, and afterward to the ship via seamless teleports set
up by Jill. Elle volunteered to screenflow SiFan’s talk. The Council
tested the tour and the procedures for Friday and thanked SiFan and
Jill for their wonderful work.
7. The next meeting is Wednesday, August 18, 3 pm HST (6 pm slt). Adra
(Diane) cannot convene the next meeting due to LIS open house on
campus. Please volunteer to convene.
