ASKING FOR JUSTICE: BURUNDIAN REFUGEES SLAUGHTERED IN KAMANYOLA/SOUTH KIVU PROVINCE IN DR CONGO
I deeply express my displeasure and discontentment toward the unconstitutional - the so called “President Joseph Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the last two days Kabila and his militias called FARDC army have massacred over 42 Burundian refugees/ asylum seekers and have wounded over 400 in Kamanyola, South Kivu Province. I also know that thousands of Congolese refugees running from Kabila’s brutal regime are peacefully living in exile in Burundi. While I know that the Burundian Refugees slaughtered in DRC are running from the government of President Peter Nkurunziza in Burundi, I will still be reaching him to express my solidarity with him and with the Burundian people for these unacceptable actions. Kabila’s action of brutality against the (most vulnerable) Burundian refugees on the Congolese soil is a clear breach of the 1951 Geneva Convention on the refugees. The UN should stop acting hypocritical and inconsistent. Joseph Kabila and all his allies in power have committed enough crimes against humanity and it is high time for them now to be indicted to the ICC. Congolese must be supported to create a transitional government lead by its youth without Kabila and all his elite circle of collaborators and the so called “opposition.” Where there is goodwill there is always a good way.
While, I have no doubt of who have committed these atrocities on the Burundian refugees in Kamanyola, I still appeal to the UN, the ICC and to all stakeholders to conduct quick investigations and bring the authors to account for their crimes. I urge all humanitarian organizations and donor governments to act immediately and provide humanitarian assistance to Burundian refugees in Kamanyola.
These fatal massacres remind us how the in 1996 Rwandese refugees were slaughtered in Zaire (DR. Congo) and up to now the humanity take it as untold story in a silenced violence.
I appeal to the International Community to take into consideration all these factors of responsibility to protect as DR Congo is no longer a ground where UNHCR and others stakeholders can continue considering to be safe haven for asylum seekers and refugees, relocating Burundians refugees from DR Congo up to Uganda remain the lasting solution to prevent and protect those fellow Africans brothers and sisters living in perilous circumstance in exile in DR Congo.
I said, I thank you again
