Impact Evaluation Workshop in Dakar, Senegal from September 30 – October 4, 2013

The World Bank is organizing a workshop on the principles and techniques of Impact Evaluation with the generous support of the British government's Department for International Development. The workshop will cover impact evaluation and policy issues across the Human Development and Social Protection Sectors. It will take place in Dakar, Senegal from September 30 – October 4, 2013.  The workshop will provide government officials, local researchers, World Bank, and other development agency staff an opportunity to share and develop their knowledge and skills in designing and implementing impact evaluations in order to inform project design.

Description of workshop

The objective of this workshop is to give participants an overview of impact evaluation and to help them design evaluations for their own projects. The overview will include techniques of impact evaluation, an understanding of its importance for policymaking and program design, a clear understanding of how to construct a results chain, and practical skills in the application of impact evaluation techniques to their own projects. The workshop will focus on applications to programs that aim to build skills and raise productivity among youth in Africa, including youth employment, education and social protection programs.

The workshop is a highly interactive mix of small and large group sessions involving the “hands on” application of what is learned throughout the week. Throughout the workshop, participants will work together as project teams with expert moderators in both the “hands-on” design of a high-quality impact evaluation and the incorporation of the latest evidence into the implementation plans for their projects. On the final day of the workshop, the teams will present their proposed evaluation plans to the whole group and receive guidance from each other and the course moderators.

Note: Participants will be broken down into groups by project teams and assigned a World Bank facilitator to help develop their evaluation plan. Staff will benefit by coming to the workshop to work on a specific project alongside government counterparts and project teams. DFID staff who are considering submitting an application to request funds through SIEF’s second call for proposals are particularly encouraged to attend.

Please note that all presentations will be conducted in French and English. A draft agenda of the workshop is attached.
