ELIJAH EMOJONG IN POLE POSITION AT ULTIMATE CHESS CHALLENGE DAY ONE.
Dear All,
The ultimate chess challenge which commenced this morning at Lugogo enters into round four tomorrow at 8:00am. In today's matches Emojong Elijah playing white in round one unleashed a vicious attack on FM Moses Kawuma's caro-kann defence which forced him to succumb by move 40. The determined Emojong launched a king side attack with a two knights combination supported by queen and Bishop battery at c2 and b1 respectively. This caused errors in the Fide Masters position resulting in a Knight sacrifice at f5 and pawn loss for black which forced him to resign.
In the second match Moses with the white army( Pieces) advantage, launched an early attack to revenge for his earlier loss in round one. He quickly gained an advantage but became complacent and played passively allowing the junior to equalized at move 29. The match eventually ended in a draw.
In the last match 3 which commenced at 6pm, the Fide Master playing black opted for the Najdorf variation of the Sicilian defense with a quick attack on the queen side playing b5 and eventually b4 forcing Emojong's Knight forward to d5.This quick attack however, resulted into disaster because of under development allowing Emojong to pounce with a killer punch after the numerous weakness on the king side which led to loss of two pawns.Moses resigned at move 28.
The ultimate challenge continues tomorrow with FM Moses playing two white and one black which should be advantageous to him, however he has an uphill task since he is trailing by 2 points after his dismal performance today.with only three round left he needs to win two and draw one just to equalise. Emojong Elijah on the other hand needs only one win to clinch victory.
The ultimate challenge is a tournament organised for the current top players in the Country and aimed at preparing them for future international engagements like the forth coming Africa individual championships whose winner is to emerge international master and also a series of other international titles at stake. This also helps in determing the strength of individual super players while promoting interest in the sport.
The winner is to bag a cool shs 400,000.
The event is organised by former Secretary General of Uganda chess federation.
