EMOJONG WINS ‘ULTIMATE CHESS CHALLENGE’ PHASE ONE
Junior Chess sensation Emojong Elijah tore the form books to pieces when he emerged champion in phase one of the much coveted “Ultimate Chess challenge” at Lugogo. He beat pre-event favorite Fide Master Moses Kawuma by 2.5 – 1.5.
The six match event which commenced on Friday morning with Elijah playing the white pieces saw the Fide Master respond with a solid Caro-kann defence to wade off the vicious attacking Prodigy. Emojong however, pilled pressure with a king side attack in which he unleashed a two knight’s combination supported by Queen and light squared bishop on C2 and b1. These numerous threats caused a crack in the masters defence resulting in a pawn loss after a white Bishop sacrifice at f5.This forced Moses to succumb before move 30.
In the second match of the day, FM Moses Kawuma employed his favorite Queen’s Indian attack to make the match even, he quickly gained initiative and it was just a matter of time for him to convert the match to its logical conclusion, The Fide master however became complacent and played passively, this gave chance to the battle hardened junior who fought hard in the end game and eventually equalized albeit a pawn down, forcing the match to a painful tie.
In the third game FM Moses Kawuma Playing black opted for the Najdorf variation of the Sicilian defence which however, culminated in a rather disastrous end. Determined to make a quick kill he employed an early attack on the queen side with a b5 and b4 evicting the c3 Knight which instead leaped forward to d5 causing numerous threats on the uncastled king. Emojong took advantage of the underdevelopment on blacks King side and broke through the centre to subdue the black monarch. This was his second win which put him in a very comfortable position.
FM Moses Kawuma fought hard in the next three games in which he needed wins to rescue the match, but Emojong kept his grip and drew the rest giving the master no chance to recover.
