I haven't seen many posts in the last little while.

Is anybody else using a raspberry pi? If so, what are you using it
for? I currently use mine to run FreeSWITCH for my VoIP Phone System
at home. I am looking to get a second one, because I saw a cool
project where I can hook the raspberry pi to a scanner and decode fire
department pages and it will sent the page to my email as a mp3.

I am always looking for cool project ideas.

I have one and sadly dunno anyone else who wants to hack here in Alberta. So right now my raspberry pi has raspBMC on it and I use it for a media center. It is a little choppy moving around in xbmc but the videos play well and high def.

I know, we're all busy with big boy jobs now.  :(

Is it just straight freeswitch, or are you running a GUI?  I'm just curious since we had discussed fusionpbx in the past.  I'm using it on the sales floor at my new job.

Allen, Daniel, did the meetings ever start up again?

I am just running straight FreeSWITCH. I like that it is a small footprint and I don't mind editing XML config files.

I did see an automated fusionpbx install script made for the raspberry pi though.

Yeah that's the install script I always use, it's not just for the raspberry pi.  Anyone going that route may want to edit the script and set the variables (http://wiki.fusionpbx.com/index.php?title=Easy_FusionPBX#Script_Variables) ahead of time... Freeswitch will take a long time to compile on that platform, and the script has you hit enter to continue multiple times if you don't run it with the "auto" argument.

How many extensions/concurrent calls can your RBP handle? Also, what codec?  I'm interested in trying it out on my dockstar.

I currently run 4 extensions at home and I have never had a problem. I integrate google voice and vitelity.net and it works like a champ.

I use the standard codecs. G722,PCMU,PCMA,GSM

So I have a raspberry pi and it just sits because I don't know what to do with it. How do I turn it into a pbx? That sounds fun.

The raspberry pi script page he linked to on the fusionpbx wiki is a good start.  Is your RBP networked?  That's kind of a requirement. :P

Call/chat me sometime and I'll walk you through the setup process, although Chris could also show you how he did it with vanilla freeswitch too.

Mike,

I also made an image of my FreeSWITCH install if you are interested too.

I could upload it to my web server.

So what's the difference between FreeSWITCH and FusionPBX?

FusionPBX is a GUI for FreeSWITCH.

I want to say something about sharing VOIP setups:  Security, security, security. Paranoia. Danger!

VOIP is a favorite target of pingsweepers and portscanners for good reason:  VOIP connections are monetarily exploitable.  All you need to run a "free unlimited outbound US calling" telco, as foreigners seem so fond of using, is to discover one unguarded SIP extension's password, that's all. Very few people actually limit how many times an extension can be registered concurrently, let alone fully implement ACLs.

Default password security on FreeSwitch is better than, say, asterisk, but please be careful to remove all current/valid SIP account credentials from anything you post, share, or whatever with whoever.

You may think I'm being over the top, but ask your SIP provider how often they get attacked/probed.

That said, I'm totally down with this conversation and I think we should do some meetings on setting up free software PBXes!

In person is good for this stuff, so a meeting may be in order.

I'm up for that.

Again, we can do thursdays at the transistor if that works for more than just me.

I just remembered, and don't know why it took me this long:  I have a conference room at my office that we could use.  It's in Draper, just off the freeway at 123rd.  No projector/TV, though.

Where/what is the Transistor? To my knowledge that is a small component in electronics. ;-)

Isn't the transistor the Orem hackerspace?

So, it is in fact the hackerspace affectionately known as tT http://thetransistor.com/chapters/

but there are facilities and other things, if you would like to use it.

In other arduino related info https://github.com/rwldrn/johnny-five if you are already familiar with javascript, not that it is the best tool for the job, but it looks fun to play with.
