Hey guys,

I've now got my wife and mother using ubuntu. It's the main distro that I've used, so I'm familiar with it. But I wanted to expand a bit, so on a spare laptop I've installed several versions like Jupiter (it works really well Allen), lubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, etc. Linux mint didn't install well, maybe we can work on that another day. My question is that now Grub is a mess and most of them are just labeled ubuntu. How do I edit the grub list? Thanks. By the way, I'm willing to host a meeting at my house, and I have several extra computers that we can just mess around with.

I'm assuming you're using grub2.

A quick google will get you tons of walkthroughs on editing the grub2 menu, (even from a live CD, if needed,) but here's the rub:

Have gparted open to identify which partitions are which.  Edit the menu.cfg, and just change the labels for each entry. (You should be able to add Linux Mint easily at this point, if desired.)  Run the grub updater or whatever it's called, and that will write the changes to the MBR. Done.

editing the menu.cfg doesn't work on Grub 2, as it is overwritten whenever you run update-grub.

You have to edit the scripts in /etc/grub.d.  I think there should be one for each menu entry.  For example, on my system, I could open 10_linux, find where the title variable is set (in my case its title="${description}, ${version} (${GRUB_DEVICE_BOOT})",  change it to what you want it to say (title="Jupiter is Big"), save it and run update-grub.

Sorry, yeah -whichever one you're supposed to edit. I thought it was also a .cfg, but now that you mention it...

Thanks for the direction, I did a google search before I did this, that's always my first stop with diagnosing, but I got too many differing instructions. I'll try this out. And regarding Linux mint, when I installed it in my VM, it worked fine, but with my notebook, the top and bottom of the screen couldn't be seen, so I couldn't do anything.

Sounds like a screen resolution issue.  Try pressing ALT+F2, run lxrandr, then play with the settings.
