Just wondering what everybody else is doing in terms of file servers? I currently use Micro$oft Windows Server 2008 R2, because it is FREE from school. However I would like to move to a linux/unix server? Any Idea. I have really been leaning towards Solaris as it supports ZFS.

Just curious to everybody's current setup for those that have file servers and what you like or dislike about what you have?

My current MS Server has 6 Hard Drives. 2x500 gb - OS Software Riad Mirror. 2x1.5tb Software Raid Mirror, 2x2.0tb Software Raid Mirror.

Thoughts?

Regards,

I'm using the Ubuntu Server and Ebox / Zentyal Stack. Zentyal (Formerly Ebox) is a Web Based UI for configuring and managing different server types and it's built on Ubuntu. You can get an ISO from the Zentyal site:

http://www.zentyal.com/

Or, you can install them separately. If you install them separately, you have to use Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS or it doesn't work right. You'll also have to add the PPA or else you'll only get the outdated Ebox 1.5 packages. The latest version is 2.1 and you can get the PPA here:

https://launchpad.net/~zentyal

Hope you have fun.

I've heard that Amahi is like eBox, which also runs on Linux, but I think it has more apps/features available to it. I haven't personally used it, but if I had a machine to setup as a dedicated server I probably would. http://www.amahi.org/

Bsd also supports zfs really well. What zfs features do you want though? Cause btrfs might work for you also

Really my big concern is that If I loose a drive will I be able to rebuild it and not have problems. I am leaning towards ZFS due to the fact that it is easy to setup and administer. and leaning towards solaris, because it uses zfs out of the box. The os goes on zfs and then you can create zfs drives. Does anybody know if btrfs is supported out of the box by default with ay distro? I would love to try it, but they all seem like you have to install to ext4 and then convert to btrfs?

At the end of the day I want software raid that has the fault tolerance of hardware raid and it seems like zfs and btrfs are the main 2. Has anybody used btrfs?

I was actually all excited for a project this weekend and realized it only took 30 minutes to have a server up and running zfs and sharing.

Sounds like you should go with Solaris or bsd, they both support zfs out of the box

I heard fedora 16 will be the first one to have btrfs as default. I could have heard wrong though.

Btrfs looks very promising. I didn't even know about it until today. I do like the fact that btrfs is going to be under an open source license unlike ads which is now owned by oracle.

I use freenas7 for my files. I heard 8 is much better. But I'm totally happy with it so far.

Fedora may support btrfs by default, but who honestly wants to use Fedora?!?!?

In Ubuntu 11.04 you can choose btrfs as anything but the boot partition.

I am on a 2.4 TB raid-z (raid 5) using Freenas 7.  It is great. Haven't had any complaints whatsoever.
