Hi Joe,

The .csv files (i.e., sighting files) that the SI application creates
are text files, and therefore can be edited with any text editor
application. However, if you choose to edit those sighting files, it
is important to recompile them (i.e., select SI's sighting list's
'select/file roster' menu item, check your sighting files, and tap the
'Compile' button) after you've made your edits. If you don't compile
your sighting files after editing them, the compiled sighting index
file (which is a binary file that speeds up searching through your
sighting file text) is out of sync with the new sighting file text.

It might also be helpful to keep in mind that the UFG application
itself is tiny and trivial compared to the data (e.g., multimedia and
sighting files) it lists. If the UFG application gets out of sync and
fubar, simply delete and reinstall it. Deleting the UFG application
does not delete the multimedia, the sighting files, or the link tokens
stored on your SD card ... which, of course, you should be backing up
if the data on the SD card is important to you.

I hope that helps.

Hi Greg,

I picked one of your dated comments to reply.

UFG (9.9.2) was working fine, I got the icons and links so they
produced
when asked. I got ambitious and also installed the SI app. When I
got to
the field (ZionNP and Bryce in Utah) I tried commenting in the SI, -
the
linking all worked.

However, the more I learned about my area (the Colorado Plateau) -I
also
learned some of my SI comments were inappropriate. I tried editing
the
comments (a csv/text file) with DOCS TO GO [v8.005 (239) -DataViz]
but
could only edit the text. So I deleted the comments!

OOPS, that also caused the UFG check/project link to stop working.
All the
UFG components (icons) are viewable and produce.

The link token is the means by which I get an overview of how often
features (e.g., etymology viewer, photo viewer, the SI and any other
feature that you [Greg] want to count) in the ufg application (or
linked to
the
ufg app) are used.

Several questions: Besides handholding, -do I need anything from you
to get
check/project working, -in the field? Do I start over with a new
UFG_link
check sum, and reinstall SI? Should I edit my comments only with a
native
csv editing program?

I am excited about the program [UFG and BNA (Birds)]. I had hoped I
could
edit the csv -in the field. Damn, I want my TREO 755p smartphone to
be able
to do it all.

It keeps me in touch, Altho service (voice and data) is spotty. I can
get
your email.

Thanks, Joe

Greg,

Thanks again for your prompt response.

I have moved to a new location (Lake Havasu Az). and am excited to get the app working again.

However, the location is west central Az (London Bridge is in sight, using binoculars).  I ask myself "Is this the eastern edge of the Sonoran & Mojave Desert  (BCR33:33)?"  The lake (Colorado River) is outside the campsite and it doesn't look too arid here? Maybe it's the wetlands?  A lat/long mapping feature would help (for the novice)??

I think the majority of the bird population may be "introduced" or a "nonbreeding visitor" with the man made lake nearby??  More research, -how exciting!

The quiet hours (heat of the day) is time enough to compile or reinstall.  UFG is a great app, it enhances my bird watching.  I really enjoy "tangling" with this program and compiling? the species.

Hi Joe,

The source of the BCR map is

http://www.nabci-us.org/bcrs.html

and I don't have a BCR map expressed in latitude and longitude.
However, I'll use it if you make one or get one from NABCI. (I'm
currently creating local trail maps expressed in latitude and
longitude.)
