“It doesn’t get any bigger than fighting as world champion in your hometown. That brings pressure, but also motivation against a really good fighter,” Jonas said via The Guardian. “We’re top boxers, so we both believe we can win. I don’t think she can outbox or outfight me. She obviously thinks the same about her chances, so the best woman will win.”
Mayer was a part of the 2016 U.S. Olympic team and is a former National Golden Gloves winner. A former super featherweight champion, her dreams of undisputed gold didn’t come to fruition following a loss against Alyica Baumgardner. The 33-year-old has since competed in two weight classes and is ready to make welterweight a permanent home.
