Dear all,
The next meeting of the NLP Reading Group will take place on Tuesday (April 19) at 10:30 in room N207 in IMPAKT.
I will lead the discussion with the following paper:
Cultural and Geographical Influences on Image Translatability of Words across Languages
by Nikzad Khani, Isidora Tourni, Mohammad Sadegh Rasooli, Chris Callison-Burch, and Derry Tanti Wijaya
https://aclanthology.org/2021.naacl-main.19/
The authors study image translatability of words, which can in turn help understanding when visual features
can be useful for machine translation. They challenge the assumption that the similar concepts in different languages should be represented by the similar images (e.g. a park looks different in the Netherlands than in Ghana).
Please at least skim the paper before the meeting. There will be a possibility to join remotely through zoom.
See you there,
Jindra Helcl
