There is a good chance the upcoming NEFAR launch will be scrubbed.
I just received a note from the president, Greg Lukach, who notes that
the drought index for the launch site is 593 right now.
If there is no rain between now and Saturday, it is very likely to be
above 600 by launch time.
By agreement with the fire marshall there, we won't launch when the KBI
drought index is 600 or above.
So please wish/hope/pray for rain this week. Looking at the weather
maps, I see nothing very hopeful on the "horizon."
If you are planning to launch in November, I encourage you to make
alternate plans. The NEFAR launch might still happen, but it is not
assured.
Alternates include the NFCC Sentinel launch near Madison and the Tampa
Tripoli launch, both of which are happening the following weekend.
Drought index for those areas looks OK right now. Both are roughly the
same driving time as the NEFAR site, maybe a little longer but not much.
I'll be going to the Tampa launch, as I've promised to deliver the rest
of the test stand Steve Ghioto and I have been building for them, and to
show them how to use it. If you decide to go to the Sentinel launch,
I'm sure Terry Zimmerman will be happy to assist your endeavors, do
certifications, etc.
Again, apologies for the bad news, but we are rocket scientists, right?
We will persist, and prevail!
