My company designed a few PLD's for a project in Steamboat Springs,
CO. The contractor recently called us to say that the peat called for
in the sand/peat filter is not available locally. For this project
they would need to import about 50 cubic yards from Denver. What are
the characteristics of the peat that make it suitable for this filter?
Is there an alternative material that might be more readily available
up here?

Deb,

The sand media in the PLD is currently recommended to be composed of 85% C33
sand and 15% peat. Peat is expensive and has to be imported from Canada or
Wisconsin. For that reason we have been researching more economic
alternatives.

As a substitute, we are recommending a mixture of 85% C33 sand with the
remaining 15% being 1/2 Class A compost and 1/2 well-shredded paper (by
volume). The University of Colorado at Denver came up with this recipe and
has tested it for filtering ability and clogging characteristics and it has
performed well in the lab.

You should be able to get shredded paper for practically nothing. Please
follow up with me if you choose to go this route - I can get you more info
on the testing if you wish.
