Hey GHIG,

Just wanted to send around some information about a great global health summer internship in DC (plus it's paid!). See the attached
flyer for an example scope of work in the Office of HIV/AIDS. I'm happy to share more about my experience last summer- they are recruiting medical, nursing and pharmacy students!

For these positions, GHFP-II is interested in individuals from a broad range of disciplines, including:
  • Public health
  • Social work
  • Education
  • International relations/development
  • Commodity security and logistics
  • Medicine
  • Nursing /midwifery
  • Public policy
  • Pharmacy
  • Business/health administration
Where Interns Will Work

USAID/Washington
The internships offer the opportunity to gain practical experience by working closely with global health professionals on vital projects that impact lives in the developing world. Positions are in one of the Global Health Bureau offices:
  • Office of the Assistant Administrator
  • Office of Health, Infectious Diseases and Nutrition
  • Office of HIV/AIDS
  • Office of Population and Reproductive Health

What is USAID?
An independent federal government agency, USAID receives overall foreign policy guidance from the US Secretary of State. The Agency supports long-term and equitable economic growth and advances US foreign policy objectives by supporting: economic growth; agriculture and trade; global health; and democracy, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance.

USAID provides assistance in five regions of the world:
  • Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Asia
  • Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Europe and Eurasia
  • The Middle East

USAID works in close partnership with private voluntary organizations, non-governmental organizations, indigenous organizations, universities, American businesses, international agencies, other governments, and other US government agencies. To learn more about USAID, the largest government donor organization in the development field, visit http://www.usaid.gov/

Confronting Global Health Challenges
The Bureau for Global Health (GH) at USAID confronts global health challenges through improving the quality, availability, and use of essential health services in the areas of child, maternal, and reproductive health, and the reduction of abortion and disease, especially HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. GH supports field health programs, advances research and innovation in selected areas relevant to overall Agency health objectives, and transfers new technologies to the field through its own staff work, coordination with other donors, and a portfolio of grants and contracts with an annual budget in excess of $1.6 billion. To familiarize yourself with the Agency’s work in health before applying for a specific internship opportunity, visit

A Commitment to Diversity
Attracting and retaining diverse new talent to the Agency’s health programs is a key goal of GHFP-II. We believe that a more richly textured workforce will be of great benefit as USAID’s Bureau for Global Health moves into the future. One way of achieving this goal is to provide increased access to the field of global health to individuals who historically may not have had easy opportunity to work in this field. This does not mean that GHFP-II internships are solely intended for applicants from underrepresented groups; instead, GHFP-II makes a concerted, targeted effort to foster applications from individuals underrepresented in the global health field. These underrepresented groups include people with disabilities, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and socioeconomically disadvantaged or geographically isolated individuals.

US Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status Required
GHFP-II interns working in or requiring frequent access to US Government facilities will be required to obtain a security clearance, which the program facilitates. To be eligible for security clearance, an applicant must be a US citizen or a US permanent resident. Participation in the GHFP-II internship program is contingent on the applicant successfully obtaining an interim security clearance.

The Application Process
The online application process will open the week of December 7, 2012 and the deadline for applications is is Monday, January 28, 2013 at 5:00 pm EST. You may apply for up to two of the available openings.

Instructions:
The objective of our applications questions is for GHFP-II to learn about YOU; please give specific examples in each response. You have several opportunities to showcase your skills and background. Please give as broad a range of examples as possible.
