Hi Friends...

My work is wondering if I am going to apply for a DEA number.... I don't know much about it and I'm not sure who I'd ask at UCSF.

Has anyone looked into it? I had the impression that we couldn't apply for it right away, but I don't see anything about that online...

Am I missing something? This was probably covered in Pro Seminar and I should have taken better notes....

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Eliza

Here is the official BRN publication on the DC'd requirements around supervision prior to applying for DEA #'s.  I believe that whoever the Medical Director is at your work decides when to move forward on that.

i just remember ellen saying it was really expensive ($900 a year?) and we shouldn't get one unless work requires it/pays for it for us

There is some info about it on the pathway to graduation moodle site. You need your furnishing number first. From moodle:

To obtain a DEA registration, a practitioner must apply using DEA Form 224. Applicants may submit the form by hard copy or on-line and complete instructions accompany the form. You can obtain the application from the DEA website: www.DEAdiversion.usdoj.gov.  Please Note: YOU MUST HAVE YOUR FURNISHING NUMBER BEFORE YOU APPLY TO THE DEA.

Hope this helps,
Rachel

I remember something about the cost of the DEA being reduced or paid for if you're working at a FQHC (or similar) but I think you would need to consult your employer for those details...
