Multi-page figure captions?

My figure captions are very very long and require multiple pages. Previously when I've used LaTeX, I've accomplished this using \captionof instead of \caption since floats don't allow page breaks within the float. But, I'm concerned that it will mess up the other carefully created aspects of the document to satisfy UCSD requirements. Has anyone else run into this? What was your solution?
