single space captions

I can't figure out how to make my figure captions single spaced. Using \caption{ \ssp words in caption here}} does make the caption single spaced, but then my citation cross referencing fails - so all \citep commands just produce ?? instead of (author, year). Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?
