Dear UCC Sisters and Brothers:
At 9:00 pm on Wednesday evening, a gunman entered Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and killed nine people who were joined together for prayer.
My stomach churns. My heart aches at the ongoing violence we see around us. The details of the shooting are unknown at this point. Charleston officials have declared the shooting a hate crime. The victims were black. The suspected killer is white. The history of racial injustice in Charleston is pungent. Our nation has seen far too many racially motivated killings, far too much violence, far too much death.
It's 1:40 in the morning as I type this. I am angry. I am very sad. And, frankly, I am at a loss. How do we respond as a church? How do I respond as a person? How does our society move beyond such madness?
At a minimum, and as a starting place, we can pray. We can pray for the families of the victims. We can pray for our sisters and brothers in Christ at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. We can pray that we would have courage fueled by compassion to seek God's justice and the peace of Christ.
With that in mind, I invite you to join me at Noon on Thursday, June 18, in the Sanctuary of Westmoreland Church for a time of prayer.
