Renee, we’ve run into more scheduling challenges in our wonderfully busy and diverse church...darnit.  There is a big choir thing from 4-6 pm on June 14th.  Could you come speak to us either at 2 pm?  Or 6 or 7 pm?  I think we’ll have at least a 12-18 people at either slot, maybe more.  

What would work best for you?

Our preference is probably for the later Just Faith slot with many of the JMT folks staying after the concert to meet you...but I appreciate your flexibility so much and want to be as considerate of you as possible.

You’re a volunteer!  With great experience!  So looking forward to meeting you.   Louisa

Hello Renee (I hope you will call me Louisa if I’m so presumptuous as to call you Renee!)  

YES! Thank you and sorry for the delay acknowledging and confirming with you—end of semester/”year” stuff has overwhelmed.

We’d love to have you ...would you prefer an hour from 4-7ishish?  Or 1-3ish?   We will be figuring how to mix you up with our Justice Taskforce “summer retreat” closing meeting which usually goes from 1- 6ish and our Just Faith class which usually goes from 5:30-7:30. If you have a strong preference for a time, I would be happy to try to work around that. Am thinking it would be good for the JF folks to come to JMT...oddly they haven’t ...so maybe later in the afternoon would be best for us. 4ish?

For our June newsletter (copy due 5/15) would you send me your time preference, a bio/favorite description of VOICE...and any update/asks around Crescent you’d like us to publicize?

And I still hope you will be able to find time to meet with Pastor Joan...for future planning.

Hello Rene,

I am ccing my co-coordinator of the UCP Justice Mobilization Taskforce (JMT), Larry Pullen, and our pastor responsible for our justice ministries, Joan Bell Haynes—so that we might coordinate all our schedules with yours.

As I mentioned this morning, we have been wanting to have you come speak to our  church’s JMT to celebrate your work for Crescent tenants—I think Pastor Joan was going to try to arrange that for our usual time, the third Sunday in June, the 21st.

However...

My hope is NOW also to have you be available to talk about community organizing from a faith perspective to my Just Faith group which normally meets on Sundays, 5:30-7:30...so I’m wondering if we might combine forces around a couple of dates that might work for you to be in Reston?  (JF is running out of Sundays to conclude by end of June so we might be able to work around a time better for you.)

If June 21st works, I could probably get JF folks there. If it doesn’t, I wonder if another night might work—maybe a Thursday night in late May or early June?

Hope this makes sense—and Larry and Joan understand my double-hat...

If I can chime in on this affordable housing issue.

The Reston Association calendar is loaded with ultra-important land use and housing issues this year. As you are undoubtedly aware, development interests hold great sway in decisions made on all fronts. I believe the other 8 Board members would agree that we seek and encourage more citizen input.

Community organizing groups (VOICE being one of them) would be wise in my mind to come up with coordinated plans (objections?) and a calm and common voice which resonates with strength. I will cite a recent example in which one citizen at Tall Oaks had a dramatic impact (with backing of many in his cluster) on the Reston Association view about Tall Oaks' future by drafting a simple, detailed position paper on the subject and presenting it in a non-confrontational manner. It was easy for me to back him and his position, and help pull others to his simple proposal that we need to take a much more detailed look at things before rubber-stamping previous leanings. In other words.....one person and one group can have more impact than you might imagine. 

I am interested in hearing the views of various people at VOICE, and I hope the attendance is opened up to a wide variety of interested parties, many of whom are probably currently unaware of many of the details, and many others who who look at the time and date and default to another element of their "busy schedules". The issue at Crescent Apartment and many other similar situations, is going to be crucial to the future of Reston. This is not an easy situation with simple solutions. Involvement is crucial in affecting any outcomes.
