In an effort to ward off the synthetic aliens (robots) from learning
about interstellar space travel technology and endangering Alpha
Centauri.....

Maureen Robinson: Wipe the flight data from the ship's harddrives.
Major Don West: I can help with that. I've got a few degaussers.
Crew Member: [Look of great concern] Why would you have those?
Major Don West: Oh, let's just say that in a previous life I had to
cover my tracks once.
And so, as the 15 Jupiter class spacecrafts orbit together on the big
hula hoop spaceport, the crew successully degausses all the platter
drives of useful information.
Whew. Tense.
