Are there any members of this group that are students at Clemson?  I am interested in reviving the Clemson Linux User Group.  It seems like CLUG folded some time ago (I can't find any trace of it after 2014), but I think it would be a great way for students interested in Linux/free software to get together and do cool stuff.  I even have a couple of servers that could be dedicated to the cause, but I am trying to figure out if there is any interest.

This really makes me happy to read, I hope there are other Clemson students!

It was UCLUG's interaction with CLUG as the host for the first SouthEast LinuxFest at Clemson in 2009 that really helped make SELF happen and get off the ground!

I'm not a student, but am glad to help out in any way that I can (presentations, etc).

Also, send a note to #linux on hackgreenville.slack.com, there might be some Tigers on there!

Also, Dr Jacob Sorber is planning to give a talk for UCLUG in June, so you might want to head to the CS dept and get his thoughts.

I definitely think the more LUGs the better.

I see a challenge with youtube channels and podcasts competing for
content attention.
And then, is there interest in attending something in person (COVID
feels like it has muted that desire in a good percentage of those that
would come out...Mostly I think it is inertia?)?

Just to note there's also an upstate discord

Only an "it-power-cycle" computer related channel, nothing Linux specific

You should join #clug on Libera (IRC).  Lonely right now, but might be somewhat active someday.

Clemson, sigh, the networking around here sucks so much.

Where's the Discord server? Send me an invite.

In an ideal world, we (as a club) could host our own Matrix server.  Combined with Element, this provides Discord-like functionality using FOSS that we could have complete control over.  At the moment, I have claimed the channel #clug on Libera.  I don't even really use Discord because I can never get the appimage to work for longer than a couple of months.

Strange. I've been using Discord on Linux on Gentoo 2023 and Debian 12 and on Android and I have not had it stop working a day in 4 years. But I use the tar.gz.

Matrix Element Jitsi lacks the noise gate (Krisp) Discord has (which is needed for everyone that has a cheap condenser microphone) (Zoom also lacks a noise gate) and lacks bandwidth on its relay servers. (The UCLUG had been using the public Jitsi servers for its online meetings. I think I joined 3 times.) P2P direct connect VOIP is unsafe. The middle boxes serve as an IP cloak which prevents randoms from DDoSing you.
