Tailscale

Anybody using Tailscale? I'm trying to get the "try it for free"
thing, but it wants me to log in with my gmail password (or
alternately microsoft or similar). I'm just not sure about the
exposure to malware or identity theft by doing that. Isn't Tailscale
built on some open-source back-end that somebody could implement
themselves without using "Tailscale"?

If you want to self-host look at NetBird.

I signed up with Tailscale with just an email, though.  It should be in the microprint below all the Google, etc. banners

Look at the old threads, too.  There was a pretty good discussion on this a week or two back

If you also want to self host just plain wireguard, I recommend https://github.com/wg-easy/wg-easy. The UI is very nice and lets you set up Wireguard with almost no manual configuration needed once it's hosted.

Thanks everyone! Yeah, "wireguard" was the project I couldn't
remember. I think I'll try the "easy wg" thing first.
