Sussex Against Privatization actions in London this week

You may have heard about the campaign at Sussex University against outsourcing there. They reached national attention through an eight week occupation, and are at the battlefront against university privatization.

Having been evicted from occupation, they're taking the fight off campus, and have two actions planned this week in London.

SMALL ACTION TOMORROW - Royal Institution, 21 Albemarle St, W1S 4BS, @ 6.30pm
They've found out that their Vice Chancellor, Michael Farthing, will be at this strange sounding event tomorrow called 'Capitalism is Dead, Long Live Capitalism?' http://www.sussex.ac.uk/fiftyyears/events/?id=18199 

They're therefore asking for people to come down to the venue just before it starts at 6.30pm to hand out leaflets and hold banners, to embarrass Farthing. If you can come along, email saqv...@riseup.net to let them know.


BIG ACTION FRIDAY - Sodexo HQ, 1 Southampton Row, WC1B 5HA, @ 2pm
Sodexo (world-renowned union busters) are one of the companies bidding for a contract in the to-be-privatized services. Sussex Against Privatization have therefore organized a demonstration at their HQ this Friday at 2pm, after a surrealist action last week: http://vimeo.com/63967406

ACTION TODAY (19/04) POSTPONED

Dear all,

Thanks to those who went to the action yesterday.

The action today has been postponed. The Sussex group have put out this update:

At today’s daily general assembly it was decided to postpone the Sodexo demonstration that was originally planned for Friday the 19th of April to a more appropriate date in the future.

The Anti-Privatisation Campaign has had a very busy and successful week of action including a large demonstration and occupation of Arts Piazza café on the Tuesday, as well as a daylong solidarity demonstration in front of Brighton Magistrates Court in support of the four students arrested two weeks ago on trumped up charges. 

The assembly decided that the Sodexo Demonstration will be more appropriate and effective if organised separately to this week’s events. An effective mobilisation against Sodexo is key to sending a strong message to the vultures of privatisation that they are not welcome on OUR campuses. We take this opportunity to reiterate our determination to fight for democratic universities free from privatisation and managerial tyranny. Although Sussex will not be mobilising for tomorrow, we encourage and support any creative expressions of dissatisfaction with Sodexo and other bidding companies.
