Hey man,

Thanks for the update. I was going to do this next week but i have a
few doubts regarding this one.

What is the difference between an international driving license and an
international driving permit? are they the same thing?

If i already have an indian driving license then is it easier to
procure an International driving license/permit?

How did u exactly go about the process, how much time did it take and
how much did it cost (importantly !)

Let us know dude......

Cheers!

IDL and IDP are the same. You will get an international driving permit only if you have a domestic permit.
The charges are Rs.500 and I got the IDP the same day in the afternoon. You just have to fill up a form and attach your passport front and last page, Visa and domestic driving permit's photo copy. You will also need to carry 2 photographs.
The process might be a lil different at your respective RTO's, and especially for mumbai and bigger cities i think it might take some more time to get the IDP in hand.

Regards,
Siddharth

Process explained by Sid above is correct... Driving license is most
important thing..Public commuting is pain once you are on Coop...If
you dont know driving .. its better to learn driving and get license
in India itself...

Please get an IDP if you have an Indian driving license... FYI...
State laws for driving license are different for each states in
USA...Many states accept IDP and many don't.. Ohio accepts
IDP :) ...Also IDP is valid for only 1 year... So until you get a
local license it is good.. Also if you have Indian license then you
dont need to give certain preliminary tests over here.. I guess in
Mumbai it requires 2 days... one day to apply and other to pick it up

Hi Hrishikesh,

I have an Indian Driving license with me.

Now,is this sufficient or should I get an International Driving license.

One of my friends in Cincinnati told me that though we get an IDP here, we will have to get another IDP from there. Only that is accepted .

Please could you let me know about this.

Sushanth,

You need to get IDP from India itself for you to use your Indian
driving license. I didn't understand your statement below of " we will
have to get another IDP from there".... I am assuming you meant
another IDP from Cincy..IDP can be issued in India itself... You might
be talking about Ohio license which you would need to take later.

Hi Hrishikesh,

Thanks for the help.

Do you know if there are any authorized agencies to issue IDP in Bangalore.

I checked up the following website http://www.drivers.com/article/207 and found that the authorized agencies to issue IDP in India are the following three :-

1) The Western Indian Automobile association,Mumbai
2) Kerala Motor vehicles Department
3) Delhi Transport Department

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Regards,

Hey Sushanth,

You have to get the IDP from the RTO.
