Hi Hrishikesh,

Thanks a lot for helping us by providing us the information regarding payment of fees.

I have another doubt regarding the courses to be taken.

When we register for the courses after coming to UC, do we need to take only those courses which are mentioned under the Fall Qtr in the website.

Do we have a choice while selecting the courses or is it decided by Prof. Alex.

As you have mentioned 18 quarter credits per quarter, could you tell me what you exactly mean by this. When I can say that you have completed a particular credit in a particular quarter for a particular subject, what does it actually mean.

If we do have a choice in registering for the courses, which courses would you recommend us to take in the first quarter. I am not too sure if you are the right person to answer this question. But if you know about it, please could you tell us about it.

Regards,

Sushanth H.S.

Again as I had mentioned in my earlier post regarding details of fees
-
$7566 (Tuition and all other fees) - This is only good for maximum of
18 quarter credits per quarter
If you go beyond 18 then you have to pay for each exceeded credit X
400 something

After coming over to UC ... you need to have meeting with Prof. Alex..
decide on courses to be taken... and then register for courses on
OneStop (most of the class will register for same courses) ... after
which your bill will be generated online... you can inform some one to
wire transfer fees from India ...ballpark number is $8K... you can
adjust later too if you paid more or less fees

Last day to pay fees for the quarter is one day before the start of
the quarter.(guess is somewhere in mid of Sep)

Hey Sushant,

I think I can answer your query regarding the quarter credits. Credits are usually the number of hours a course meets in a week. In the list of courses you can see that some courses have 4 credits some 3 and some 2. This means that for that particular course the number of hours of classwork or lab work in a week is either 4, 3 or 2.

If we are supposed to complete a min of 18 credits per quarter that simply means that we have to take the courses which meet or exceed the 18 credits. For example you can take 4 courses of 4 credits each and 1 course of 2 credits and just meet the 18 credit requirement. If we are allowed to take extra credits then you can take more than 18 credits as well.

Your GPA is later on calculated based on the the grades you make in each course and the number of credits each course has. Normally the calculation of GPA would be something like this,
GPA= Summation of (numerical value of grade X credits) of all courses u have taken in a quarter / (total number of credits in that quarter).

Hrishikesh, you can correct me if I am wrong here. I have given my interpretation based on the system I had in my undergraduate study which is very similar to the US grading system.

Siddharth

Hi Sushant and Siddharth

You are absolutely right siddharth. But one does not need to register
for 5-6 courses per qurter. Its very difficult to manage those many.
The seniors said that students take up 3-4 courses and the rest
credits are managed by taking upprojects and other seminars or
reports. As yours is a co-op program u guys would definitely have some
projects and semnars which would fetch you guys valuable credits. 5-6
courses is out of question for any student.

Let me know what you think about this.

Sushanth,

Please see my reply inline --

I have another doubt regarding the courses to be taken.

When we register for the courses after coming to UC, do we need to
take only
those courses which are mentioned under the Fall Qtr in the website.

-- Yes ... You can take any courses listed under Autumn Qtr from any
College.. But since we have just 4 quarters .. Prof. Lopes pushes
everyone to take IS Core courses first and then BBK courses..before
going on Coop ..all from COB

Do we have a choice while selecting the courses or is it decided by
Prof.
Alex.
-- As mentioned above priority is finishing off IS core courses... if
you still have appetite for more.. than you can take other courses
also too

As you have mentioned 18 quarter credits per quarter, could you tell
me what
you exactly mean by this. When I can say that you have completed a
particular credit in a particular quarter for a particular subject,
what
does it actually mean.
-- USA grading system is based on Credits ... UC follows Quarter
system.. so quarter credits...MS-IS -> graduate student so Grad
quarter credits
Usually a 4 Quarter Credit course will once a week for 3 hours for
whole quarter
and a 2 Quarter Credit course will be once a week for 3 hours for half
quarter
There are also Flexi courses on weekends...depending on how courses
are offered.
Generally MS-IS folks register for 4 courses X 4 qtr crdts = 16 qtr
crdts... You can change combination with 2 qtr crdt courses too..You
can also take additonal courses if you want above 16.. Not
recommended .. as IS core courses -- course load would be huge.. So no
point overkilling oneself

If we do have a choice in registering for the courses, which courses
would
you recommend us to take in the first quarter. I am not too sure if
you are
the right person to answer this question. But if you know about it,
please
could you tell us about it.
-- You need to register for IS core courses offered in Autumn and one
or more of the BBK course..or elective course... your choice of
combination

As I had a glance on the Onestop - courses offerd in IS for Autumn qtr
-- I see you will all need to register for IT MGMT (4G) and DATA MOD &
DESIGN (4G) as IS Core course and ERP as elective

For remaing you can take a BBK or Elective

UC MS-IS does not give credits for completing just projects/reports/
seminar separately... it integral part of course work itself.. So if
you take a course.. depending on course designed by Prof...and
weightage assigned by him.. there can be classes to attend, multiple
assignments, project work, project report and project presentation as
well as multiple quiz, midterm and final exam.. and a cumulative grade
will be given for all of it

As mentioned above... 16 grad qtr credits is standard for MSIS per
qtr.. it is more than enough to keep you on your toes for whole
quarter but you can still take more if you want

Also Sid has explained the credit and GPA system above well

Last part I missed to inform which I thought was important to post...
If you feel you have covered a particular course in your Undergrad or
as part of your work experience then you can try to waive that
particular course... by providing evidence to Prof. Lopes in written
and under his discretion and on case by case basis he can waive a
particular course and you can save money and efforts for not doin the
course again...

Hrishikesh, thanks for this valuable information...Clears a lot of doubts :)
@all..as hrishikesh has mentioned about waiving of a few courses,it is advisable to keep your undergrad syllabus copy with you so that you can convince Dr.Lopes if you wish to waive a particular course...

Cheers,
Abhinav
