Hey all,
First off, I'm still not sure when the meetings will be. So far,
Mondays ~3:30 seem to be the winning time. If that doesn't work for
you, please send me an email directly (don't reply to this or it tries
to send to whole group!!) or respond to my survey, noting you can't
make Monday (
http://www.dinkypage.com/philclub2011survey).
Finally, Brett Hackett, UCD Faculty, would like to start a Kripke
reading group this semester and I'm forwarding his message because
there are so many students on our list who are not philosophy majors
and may not have gotten his email. If you're interested, email him:

terribly interesting to you.
The book we'll be reading (at least to start) is "Naming and
Necessity" by Saul Kripke and can be purchased from
amazon.com<http://
amazon.com> here:
http://www.amazon.com/Naming-Necessity-Saul-Kripke/dp/0674598466/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295642753&sr=8-1.
It's a short book (it is actually a compilation of three 1970 lectures
from Kripke), 150 pages, but it is considered by many to be one of the
greatest contributions to philosophy in the last 100 years.
Essentially, this text offers an introduction to one next step in
logic: modal logic. More importantly though, in this short set of
lectures, Kripke articulates (for the first time) the modern treatment
of modal language (viz. the notion of metaphysical possibility) and
offers a number of very compelling solutions to puzzles in the
Philosophy of Language. If you've ever been introduced to the theory
of names as "rigid designators" in one of your classes (probably a
class with Prof. Shelby), this is the source of that notion.

If you're interested, send me an email (

saying so and we'll try to set up a meeting place/date/time that is
mutually agreeable.
Hope you're all having a great semester!
