University of Colorado Denver Department of Philosophy Presents:
"Pragmatic Objectivity"
David Hildebrand
UCD Department of Philosophy
Abstract: Pragmatism is often portrayed as being relativistic, against
absolutes and against objective truth and reality. While pragmatism
does deny there is much sense to be made of an account of reality as
singular and final, it is not fair to say that pragmatism rejects
objectivity. This talk will elucidate the concept of "pragmatic
objectivity" and explain how such an objectivity is, while not
comprehensive, nevertheless not relativistic, either. If there is
time, I will trace out some similar notions of pragmatic objectivity
in the fields of history and journalism.
Bio: David L. Hildebrand is Associate Professor of Philosophy at
University of Colorado Denver. He is the author of Beyond Realism and
Antirealism: John Dewey and the Neopragmatists and Dewey: A Beginner's
Guide, as well as articles on various American philosophical figures.
