DSL service isn't very good here. No matter who you get as your service
provider, everything is handled on back-end by Pacbell (I think!), and
Pacbell has been pretty bad at providing a good solid steady connection
(goes off a couple times a week, though not always when you're home; also
they started capping the top speed). Their customer service isn't very
good either (you'll either get someone really good or someone really
inexperienced, but 99% it's someone inexperienced... you're also on hold
quite often.) Because of their bad service, people often choose another
provider to so they don't have to deal with Pacbell directly. From what
I've heard, they get better service this way. People seem to like Omsoft
(
http://www.omsoft.com/). No matter who you choose besides Pacbell,
though, you'll probably end up paying $10 more per month -- Pacbell is (or
was) $40/mo, other places are usually $50/mo. A couple apartments also
offer shared T1 connection (universiting housings and Graystone Apartments
being the primary ones.)
Even though DSL isn't very good, it still beats a 56K connection... when
it's working :)
Hope that helps!
