CSAS is proud to announce the 2nd Sarah Kailath Memorial Lecture
- a lecture series on the theme of Women and Leadership. This lecture
series has been established in memory of Sarah Kailath (February 5 1941 -
October 15, 2008), a long-time supporter of CSAS’s mission and
activities and in whose name the center holds an endowed chair titled
the "Sarah Kailath Chair in India Studies." Our second Sarah Kailath
Memorial lecture will be delivered by Rohini Nilekani.
Rohini Nilekani is Founder-Chairperson of Arghyam, a foundation she set
up with a private endowment, to work on water and sanitation issues in
India. She is also Founder-Chairperson of Pratham Books, a charitable
trust which seeks to put "A book in every child's hand." An
ex-journalist, author and philanthropist, Rohini has been deeply
involved with development issues for more than a decade. She is
currently a member of the Audit Advisory Board of the Comptroller and
Auditor General of India. She sits on the Boards of many non-profits,
notably ATREE (the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the
Environment) and Sanghamithra Rural Financial Services. Rohini has
authored two books published by Penguin India- a novel -
Stillborn - and also a non–fiction account of dialogues she moderated between social and corporate leaders called Uncommon Ground.
The
Sarah Kailath Memorial Lecture on "Women and Leadership," derives from the Sarah Kailath Chair in India Studies.
The chair was established by Thomas Kailath, and Vinita and Narendra
Gupta in honor of Dr. Kailath's wife, Sarah Kailath, to enhance
awareness and knowledge of issues relating to the Indian subcontinent.
The current Sarah Kailath Chair is Lawrence Cohen,
Chair, Center for South Asia Studies and Professor, Anthropology and
South Asian Studies. Professors Raka Ray, Robert P. Goldman and Thomas
Metcalf previously held the Chair.
