For over three decades, Dr. Ilina Sen has been associated with numerous civil society and women’s movements in India. She co-founded Rupantar, a civil society group in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh in 1994 along with her husband, Dr. Binayak Sen, to promote indigenous (adivasi) knowledge, health, education and conserve biodiversity. The NGO undertakes programs such as, a village clinic in a malaria endemic area, an agricultural program focused on organic farming and preservation of indigenous biodiversity, program on food security and distribution systems, and several women’s empowerment initiatives, including providing resources for victims of domestic violence.


She has authored several books on marginalized communities and the women’s movement in India - "A Space within the Struggle: Women's Participation in people's Struggles", "The migrant women of Chhattisgarh", "The Women's Movement in India". Together, both Ilina and Binayak have worked for more than three decades among some of India’s most impoverished and socially stigmatized populations (miners, peasants and India’s indigenous groups) on issues of health, livelihood and civil liberties.

Dr. Ilina Sen is currently is a professor of Women's Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, India.
