Folks,

Last couple years, I've been going over to Covington to ride in Indiana Monday Labor Day - several have joined us, typically getting started at 830 central (930 Indiana time). As far as I know, the old route south from Perrysville is still a disaster. Instead, using Covington as a base, you can use the Wabash River Ride routes on mainly very good road. Here are 3 possible routes for folks. I don't know yet what time I'll get started on this ride as we will be involved in family stuff Saturday and Sunday ahead of this. That is to say, I'm not willing to lead but maybe someone who has ridden this before can volunteer. I don't know if Rob Grider is leading friends from Danville, friends who overlap with others who are part of one of the groups I'm emailing here.

Attica has multiple places to eat (including a subway a McDonalds, etc, there are a couple of places to stop along the way for restrooms (last year there was a portapotty at the tennis courts in Attica), lots of corn for Richard (and me).

Covington has a bike trail that encircles 3/4 of town. When coming back into town, it's a little tricky picking up the bike trail going south so there's a need to watch for signs of it. Going north is also possible and is nice too but has some very rough sections of pavement where tree roots have destroyed the path. The advantage of the north route is that you skip all main roads and end at the park. The south route brings you into town via a North-South main street and you can use a one off road though any of the roads north get you back to the park eventually. Instead of using the bike path, you can even go straight into town on the main E-W drag (136) as it's 35mph skipping the bike path entirely and then turn north towards the park. If the mexican restaurant is open on Monday, might be an interesting place to eat at...

There's lots of good parking and the start/end of the bike trail at the main park: 1 City Park Dr, Covington, IN 47932
This can be gotten to via I74 to 63 to Hwy 136 or I74 to Stringtown Road exit 8 and then working your way through town (which can be handy if you haven't been there before).

The routes below all start/end from the park. All of the routes have the same core. Note that there are several ways through Williamsport but through town takes you past the "highest waterfall in Indiana - don't blink and only if it's running"....the WRR route bypasses town (where there is likely to be an open gas station or two).

Covington-Attica 50 miler: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37288736 - I mapped this one with the bike route going north and west back to the park but you can also use the route south or through town. This route bypasses the covered bridge.

The next two routes go through the covered bridge. This requires almost 1 mile on Hwy 41. Did anyone ride this as part of the Wabash River Ride? I heard that Hwy 41 was closed through here for some construction...If you aren't comfortable on a somewhat busy road, please bypass this section. I've included a blowup of this section attached but it's a right turn on 860N instead of a left/east towards Hwy 41 and then a left on 70W that runs into the route down to Veedersberg.

Covington-Attica-Veedersberg 63 miler: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37288687 - this route uses the bike loop south back into Covington that I prefer (lots of shade and nice trees).
I'm still researching this ride a bit. There is a newly completed off road connection just south of 136 in Veedersberg that I've sketched in here. I'm told it's there but I don't know how complete. Last year, we just road along Hwy 136 to get to the Casey's. The ice cream shop was closed, don't know it's status this year. There's decent shoulder and the north side has some new multiuse paths as well.

Covington-Attica-Veedersberg 102 miler: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40752390  - This is a variation on  a 100/101 mile route that comes up diagonally from Veedersberg and uses Stringtown Road (which has a very busy 1/4 mile section coming in from the Interstate). Instead, it exits Veedersberg via Corporation Line Road north and then follows back into Covington the same as the above two routes where you can go north or south on the bike trail. I've set this up so that you go south and then through a bit of town eastward and onto the bike trail going north.

I’d like to do one of these loops, but need a lift there and back. Anyone got a car big enough to hold me and my long wheelbase recumbent?
