2. He wore #36, and played during the early Waldorf era. He went on to
play several years in the NFL. Who was he?
Johnny Olszewski (oh-SHEF-skee). Fullback, 1950-52. 2504 career yards,
4th best in Cal history. 6.0 ave. per carry tied with Jensen for career
best. 1008 yards in 1950, sixth best single season. All-American 1952.
Played nine years in NFL and one in old AFL: 1953-57 with Chicago
Cardinals, 1958-60 with Redskins, 1961 with Lions, 1962 with Broncos.
Died last year.
Note: Jensen and Olszweski both wore #36.
3. Who scored Cals first TD in the 1996 season?
Sean Bullard. He caught a scrambling Ziv Gottliebs pass after a botched
field goal attempt vs. SJS.
4. True or False: Vic Bottari was a stadout player on the Wonder Teams.
False. "Vallejo Vic" played on the Thunder Teams of 1936-38.
5. What Cal player ran a kickoff back 102 yards for a TD vs. USC in
1949?
Frank Brunk. "Brunks Run" was, until The Play 33 years later,
considered to be the most exciting play in Memorial Stadium history.
6.What USC player, now a famous sportscaster and philanderer, tried
unsuccessfully to make a diving tackle of the Cal player referred to in
question 5?
Frank Gifford.
7. As things now stand, JC transfer Justin Vedder will start Cals
season-opening game at quarterback this year. Name the last JC transfer
to start the season-opener at QB for Cal, and the year he started.
Charlie Young in 1977.
8.In the mid-'70s, three different JC transfers started Cals
season-opener at QB in three successive years. Name the QBs and the
years.
1975 Fred Besana. 1976 Joe Roth. 1977 Charlie Young.
9.In 1965, Cal beat Penn State 20-17 at Berkeley, scoring the winning
TD on a 46-yard pass on the last play of the game. Who threw the pass,
and who caught it?
Jim Hunt to Jerry Bradley. It was in the north endzone. Two Penn State
defenders went for the ball. They collided, sending the ball high into
the air. Bradley dove under it and caught it for the winning TD.
10. In 1971, at Berkeley, Cal beat Oregon State 30-27, scoring the
winning TD on a seven yard pass on the last play of the game. Who threw
the pass, and who caught it?
Jay Cruze to Steve Sweeney. South endzone, back left corner. Right in
front of where I was standing. I'll never forget it.
11. In 1972, Cal won the Big Game 24-21, scoring the winning TD on a
seven yard pass on the last play of the game. Who threw the pass and who
caught it?
Vince Ferragamo to Steve Sweeney. South endzone, in almost the same spot
as the catch vs. OSU a year earlier. The field was a muddy slippery
mess. Sweeney lined-up on the left as a tight end, and the plan was for
him to run a fade to the corner. Stanford DB Jim(?) Ferguson read the
play, and blocked Sweeneys path. Sweeney then cut to his right. Ferguson
slipped in the mud and fell, leaving Sweeney wide open. Ferragamo, a QB
with great ability to read and react, read Sweeneys move and hit him in
stride. Sweeney somehow managed to hang onto the muddy ball for the
score.
12. What hightly controversial event took place with :04 to go in the
1970 Cal-UCLA game?
UCLA trailed 21-18. Two highly controversial pass interference
penalties, both called by back judge Marv Tommervick, had kept their
drive alive. With about :10 to go and no time-outs remaining, the
Bruins were at about the Cal five. QB Dennis Dummitt went back to pass,
found nobody open, and scrambled to his right. Cals Tom Grieb hit him at
about the three, sending him to the turf. Dummitt lunged for the goal
line, but hit the turf about a yard short. He then slid over the goal
line. Head linesman Earl Boles called it a touchdown. :04 was left, but
the Bears were unable to return the kickoff for a TD, and UCLA won
24-21.
Game films clearly showed that Dummitt hit the ground before he crossed
the goal line. The Pac-8 fired Boles after that game.
13. In 1969, Cal lost 14-9 to USC. The Trojans winning TD was set-up
when a Cal player muffed a punt. Who was that Cal player?
Bernie Keeles.
14. Who holds the Cal record for longest punt return for a TD, and what
was unusual about that punt return?
Don Guest, vs. Washington State in the 1966 season-opener at Spokane. It
was a missed field goal attempt. Guest ran it back 108 yards for the TD.
Cal won 21-6. (I don't think missed FG attempts can be run-back anymore)
15. What two pro teams did Jackie Jensen play for?
The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. Jensen left Cal after his
junior season in 1948 to play baseball. (Yes, he was a star baseball
player at Cal). He signed with the Yankees, and hoped to succeed Joe
DiMaggio as their center fielder, but some guy named Mantle beat him
out. He was traded to the Red Sox and had a decent carrer with them.
16. Prior to Steve Mariucci, who was the last Cal head football coach to
last only one year? What year was that?
Frank Wickhorst in 1946. Wickhorst, an assistant at Cal for years under
Navy Bill Ingram and Stub Allison, proved to be a very poor head coach.
His team was riddled with dissension, much of which was caused by him.
After a disasterous 2-7 season, including a 25-6 Big Game loss,
virtually the entire Cal team publicly announced that they would not
play in 1947 if Wickhorst was still the coach. Students and alumni
circulated and signed petitions calling for Wickhorsts ouster. He was
replaced by Pappy Waldorf, who with the same players, guided Cal to a
9-1 season in 1947.
17. Who ran 46 yards for a TD on Cals first offensive play in the 1941
Big Game?
Al Derian.
18. Cals last TD in the 1941 Big Game was scored on a blocked punt. Who
punted for Stanford, who blocked the punt for Cal, and who caught it in
the endzone for the TD?
I had always thought that the punter was Frankie Albert, but according
to John T. Sullivan in his book "The Big Game" (Lesiure Press 1982 ),
the punter was Al Cole. It was blocked by Jack Herrero, and caught by
Bob Reinhard for the TD.
19. Who intercepted a Nevada pass and returned it 100 yards for a
two-point defensive conversion in Cals 33-15 win over the Wolf Pack last
year?
Kevin Devine.
20. Who intercepted a Wisconsin pass and returned it 100 yards for a Cal
TD in the Bears 28-12 win over the Badgers in 1990?
John Hardy.
21. True or false: OSU beat Cal in 1971.
True. Ohio State University beat Cal 35-3 at Columbus.
22. Joe Starkey has been the radio play-by-play voice of Cal football
continously since 1975, except for the first six games of the 1977
season. Who was the PBP announcer for those games?
Larry Calton. Starkey resigned as Cals announcer after the 1976 season
to accept the PBP job with the Minnesota Vikings. Calton replaced him,
but was so awful that he was fired after six games. Starkey returned for
the seventh game (UCLA) and has been the voice of Cal Football ever
since.
23. This man recently retired after 34 years at KNBR. He was the
play-by-play voice of Cal football in 1971. Name him.
Frank Dill. (no, Mike Clearly was not the color commentator on those
broadcasts.....)
24. Wes Howell, a standout reciever on Cals 1982 team, came to Cal from
Chabot JC. Who was the Cal coach who signed him to a letter of
intent?
Dick Kuchen. Howell came to Cal on basketball scholarship, then played
football after his basketball eligibility expired.
25.What Cal placekicker kicked a PAT with his sweats on in the 1979
Garden State Bowl?
Mick Luckhurst.
26. Who caught-up with Roy Riegles and pulled him out of his own endzone
at the end of the infamous wrong-way run?
Benny Lom.
27. How many Big Game TDs did Chuck Muncie score?
Six: One in 1973, one in 1974, four in 1975. He also threw a TD pass
to Wesley Walker in the 1975 Big Game.
28. Lots of Cal players have been named All-American, but only one has
been named a first-team All-American three times. Who was he?
Rod Franz, guard, 1947, '48, '49.
29. Who scored Cals last touchdown in the Bears 26-3 Big Game win in
1967? Randy Humphries.
30. In 1967, at Berkeley, Cal upset Michigan 10-9, scoring the winning
TD on a 77 yard touchdown pass late in the game. Who threw the pass, and
who caught it?
Randy Humphries to John McGaffie.
31. What significant role did Art Murakowsi play in Cal Football
history?
Murakoski was the Northwestern ballcarrier who scored a controversial TD
against Cal in the 1949 Rose Bowl. He fumbled near the goal line, and
Cal recovered in the end zone, but line judge Jay Berwanger ruled that
Murakowski crossed the goal line before fumbling. Films and photographs
indicate otherwise. Northwestern won 20-14.
32. What significant role did Paul Camanella play in Cal Football
history?
I thought his guys name was Paul Camanella, but Steve Nelson, who
appears to know as much Cal trivia as I do, says it was Pat Cannamella.
In any case, Nelson has already answered this question thorougly.
John Olszewski always said that the play on which he was injured was a
clean play. Over the years I have talked with fans from Cal and USC who
were at that game. I have talked with Cal and USC fans who say it was a
clean play, and with Cal and USC fans who say that Camanella definetly
deliberatly twisted Olszewskis leg. In any case, that game in 1951
marked the beginning of a downward cycle in Cal football history, one
from which the Bears have never recovered.
33. The name Bud Brennan is etched in Cal Football history. What did he
do to earn his place?
Memorial Stadium, Sept. 28, 1940. Cal vs. Michigan. Brennan, a
40something man with a balding head, came out of the south endzone
stands and attempted to tackle Michigans Tom Harmon ('ol 98, the 1940
Heisman winner, and Mark Harmons father), who was on his way to yet
another TD in the Wolverines 41-0 win. Harmon easily juked Brennan,
who went sprawling to the turf. The Berkeley police were so impressed
with Brennans effort that they gave him a safe escort out of the
stadium, and free room & board at their place.
34. Who scored the winning TD for Cal in the 1980 Big Game?
Lloyd John "J" Torchio.
35. Vince Delgado scored TDs in the 1985 and 1986 Big Games, both on the
same play. What play was that?
Flanker reverse.
36. This man came to Cal in 1973, a tranfer from New Mexico Highlands.
He wore #32, was 5'11" 185, had 9.6 speed in the 100 yard dash. In
football he played running back, and ran track in the spring. He would
have rushed for many more yards had he not been overshadowed by Chuck
Muncie. Do you remember his name?
Howard Strickland.
37. Who scored the winning touchdown for Cal in the 1970 13-10 win over
USC?
Dave Penhall.

season-opening win over UCLA in 1993?
Eric Zomalt.
40. Who was Cals SID before Kevin Reneau?
John McCasey.

For your edification, blocked FGs are considered live, missed ones tend
to leave the field of play. I'm not sure what the ruling is on one
that bounces off the crossbar and lands in the field of play.
