just curious...when did the "Bear Territory" cheer start? I don't
remember it during the 70's...
My two daughters love to yell it when we're watching the Bears...they
even got a small round of applause from Navy fans at the Aloha Bowl last
year (we sat in the 10th row, right behind the Navy bench)...of course,
they sing the "sanitized" version...seeing a 6 year old and a ten year
old say "damn" just isn't all that cute...

I'm pretty sure this cheer is not Cal-specific. I've heard a lot of
different schools use it (obviously with the appropriate mascot in
place of "bear"). I think it's just one of those generic cheers that
we happen to have appropriated. Not that there's anything wrong with
that.

Oops, I said Snyder's first year, but this sounds exactly right.

On the other hand, it could have started at Cal and been copied by an
unimaginative high school cheerleading coach. As I mentioned in a
previous post, my high school alma mater (and that of at least five
other high schools I know of), is a blatant rip off of "Hail to
California".

...and believe it or not, Kiwanis International's organization hym, "Hail
Kiwanis", is also sung to the tune of "Hail to California" & has been for
decades.
