More on simpler URLs for users

Last time, I queried about why every user subdomain went something
like:
www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~username
...instead of something simpler like ocf.berkeley.edu/username. In
other words, why the need for the www and the tilde.

So how about this: username.ocf.berkeley.edu
No tildes. No need to share the preceding www. And it's much simpler.
Hopefully, that wouldn't be too hard to implement?

depends on how they do their dns. It might not be in their control.
